OK, I'm trying to use a groovy board to put a design in a block set on point. It's a 12" block, the on point measurement is about 16". I cant make it work.

I have my block positioned in the sewing field, can't move it because I only have about 1/2" extra at the top and the bottom. So then when I try to position my board it hangs off the front edge of the table by 6" or so. Is there something obvious I'm missing...probably, but I'm having a mental block. Can the stylus be moved? Is my machine too small (Millie).

Seems like this should work, if anyone has a solution I'd love to hear it. I'm hoping someday I'll be past all this stuff, sure seems like I'm a slow learner!

ON point, makes it a bit harder.  Can you do  half the block in the field, roll on then complete the other half.

I can't quite visualize the actual set-up, but my suggestion would be to put the block on the quilt top in the exact center of the field. Needle down in the exact center of the block and lock both channel locks, which keeps the head from shifting. You can needle up if you want to. Then move the block pattern board on the table so the stylus is touching the exact center of the board. Swivel the board so you have the correct position to stitch it on-point.  If it all fits, tape down the board, after doing a dry-run to make sure the angle of the on-point is perfect.

With it set like that you'll be able to see where you can shift positions of the top and the board to actually stitch it out. You may not be able to accomplish what you want because the stylus is offset when attached to the carriage. Because of that the board might need to hang off the rails a bit to get the correct placement. This won't work because you'll run into the board when you move the head to stitch.

 

You can borrow my Topper if you want to come and get it. You'll be able to stitch that size pattern board from the front. Let me know if this was helpful or if you want to visit to pick up the Topper.

This is what happens when I place the board on the table in the exact position to stitch on the block. Seems like its not going to work. Linda, I've taken the quilt top roller off the machine. Would I need that back on to install the topper?

Hi Cindy--yes, you need the front roller for the Topper to sit on. But then you can take it off again when you're finished.

Thanks for the topper offer Linda. I think I'll have santa bring me one for Christmas but for now I'm going to plan B for this quilt and cover it with a lot of CC's. The piecer decided to try something new and pressed all seams open so I don't have one ditch to travel in....I want to do piano keys in the border, not sure how thats going to work. It's really beautiful though.

I just got out a 12" square board I have for my Millenium.  If you move the machine and quilt so the very front of the block is close to the front roller, my stylus is then only 2" from the edge of the table and the board on point will fit on my table.  I can then follow the pattern board all the way with the stylus and the board does not need to go over the rails.

 

It seems like you are trying to position the board based on where  the quilt is,  Instead set the board up  then position the quilt to the board.

Thanks Lyn, I'll try again after I get the current quilt off the machine, it does seem to me this should work. I am trying to match the board to the block position because as I had it there was only about 1/2" between it and the front roller and the same with the back roller, no room to move it around.

I believe you that it should work and I want it to work, I'll let you know.

Cindy, are you qulting from the front, needle end to me, with the Topper (similar to QZ) in place?

 

Or

 

Are you using the board on the table in back, and using the stylus to follow the grooves?

 

It makes a diff.

Hmm.  If your quilt block is centered in your stitching space, then the groovey board should be centered on the table.  Do you have the stylus in the right spot in the groovey board?  If you do, this is really weird.

I know Annie, it's weird. It's probably something I'm doing wrong, I'm noting all the suggestions and I'll work on it again in a few days. The stylus is attached to the front axle, if it was back where the laser light is it would work perfectly.
