Ann Wight
I was reading this morning in a Facebook group of professional quilters and came across a post wondering if they could quilt a denim quilt on a longarm. When I got my Millennium, it never occurred to me to question if I could quilt denim or not--I just did it! Thanks APQS for making a machine that doesn't have to be questioned! Here are a few photos of some of my denim quilts and more in my Picasa album: Edited to add one more photo of what the seams look like when top is ready to quilt. I couldn't figure out how to add a photo to a quoted comment, so I am posting it here in response to a question. https://picasaweb.google.com/104717890452996658520/DenimQuilts#

What size needle did you use and what type of thread? Thanks~ That panto is Square Spiral by Karyn Emerson. Woops, I forgot to answer your 2nd question. I always use a 4.0 and usually use So Fine by Superior.

Ann Wight
Wow Ann - these are great! Could you tell us what batting and top/bottom thread you use? Your tension looks perfect! I have used cotton thread by Signature and poly So Fine by Superior. The one of the close up was So Fine. I use So Fine in the bottom on both. I usually use Hobbs 80/20 and a 4.0 needle. HeidiP
What size do you typically make the denim quilts? I have a bunch of jeans ready to do something with.
Ann Wight
What size do you typically make the denim quilts? I have a bunch of jeans ready to do something with. When I make them they are usually 60 x 80...unless they are for a child. I made camping quilts for the grandkids and they were about 45 x 60. The tent quilt was 90 x 120 which was the largest denim quilt I have ever done.
badnad
What size seam do you use and how do you press so that you don't have thick intersections? Do you have to raise the hopping foot so it does not push thru the thickness? Nadine Freddie Bliss

Do you have to raise the hopping foot so it does not push thru the thickness? Nadine Freddie Bliss I use a 1/4 inch seam and press everything open-- really really well. I have never raised my hopping foot....for any kind of quilt. However, I have done a few customer quilts that I had to watch very carefully to make sure I avoided intersections. People often think that since it's a denim quilt, it doesn't matter how you piece it.
PaulaSpalding
I am getting ready to start my own jean quilt and want to know what size needle you use. I have only been quilting since August, so I have only used one size needle so far. (actually, I didn't even realize there were more sizes until recently). zeke
I did one for my grandson many years ago called the tough man quilt which had fleece on the backside and was rolled up and held together with a leather belt. I never seen a young kids light up so bright. Zeke.
