Peggy (SewAsylum)
How do you all feel about broadcloth for quilts? It is inexpensive and seems sturdy, does it hold up, or is this a no-no? Also, when you guys do charity quilts, do you keep track of what it cost you and claim it on your taxes? Just curious. Thanks
ffq-lar
I can't offer an opinion about broadcloth. About charity quilts, you can claim cost of all materials (fabric, batting, thread) as a charity deduction on a long form. You cannot claim any labor, whether for piecing or for quilting. JustSewSimple
Broadcloth is a heavy fabric that will probably out weigh the other fabrics in your quilt which may cause problems. The other things to watch is that most of today's broadcloth is not 100% cotton. Although you can find it, 100% cotton is not on most of the shelves. Watch for that. Since it is heaver than quilt cottons it is also not as cuddly.
quiltedsunflower
If you are looking for a solid, Kona Cotton is very nice and less expensiver per yard than printed quilting fabric. Missouri Star Quilt Company (on-line, but located in Hamilton, Missouri) carries lots of solids for $5.75 per yard. I'm not sure where Imperial Missouri it, but it might be a nice road trip. RoseCity Quilter
I am a shop owner, and Sylvia is correct, broadcloth is not 100% cotton! that is why it is cheaper. I dislike it, a lot.....kona solids are my fav......
Peggy (SewAsylum)
Thanks everyone! I will stay away from broadcloth. I can find Kona cotton in my area, though the color selection is limited. I use the white to embroider things on. I would love to go to the Missouri Star Quilt Co. and meet Jenny. Someday I will! Imperial is about 30 minutes south of St. Louis. And thanks for the "charity quilt" info.
dancingraisin
I too have the "limited color" problem so I have to order online. I understand that it is possible to get a color card but haven't figured out from where yet. Does anybody know?
