Grip Tape for Rulers?

Recommended Posts

I recently returned from MQX East where I learned about another re-purposing idea of non-skid for rulers: clear skatebord grip tape. I stopped by our local skateboard shop and got a 1/2' length, it comes about 9" width.

As you can imagine, it's a sticky tape that adheres to a skateboard top to make it safer to stand on. The tape has a fairly significant grit finish to it and I know it will scratch the surface of another ruler if I'm not careful when storing the ruler.

Has anyone tried this on their rulers? Did you find a brand that has a more rubberized texture vs. a gritty surface? This one says mini-logo on the backside.

Just thought I'd ask, I'm sure I'll try this on an older ruler for rotary cutting, just to see how it goes. The tape is very sticky so removal might be tricky. I'm also interested to see how it treats fabric, whether it mars the fibers.

I'll get back to you with my conclusions!

Ps oodles of beautiful quilts at MQX, congrats to everyone!

Colette I use this for my rulers.  You only need very little pieces, 1/8" by about 1/2" on 4 corners.  I like it a lot and have never had a problem with it.  There are some fabrics like cotton sateen that might be a little more sensitive so I'm just careful not to slide the ruler, rather I lift it and re-position.  On most cottons it is just fine.  It does come off without any trouble if you need to remove it.  If you want to remove some of the grit just rub it with a rock or something very hard and wear it down a little.  I like that it doesn't obstruct my view when lining up rulers.  Oh and make sure you use old scissors you don't care about when cutting this material...ask me how I know  :(

Although I have not tried this yet, Dusty Farrell recommended plain, old fashioned rubber cement glue in a class I took from him. You can roll it off and reapply easily if you want grippers in a different location; and it is cheap and goes a long way. I have heard a of a lot quilters using the skateboard tape and have not tried it either. I have been using the clear rubber circles and find they work for me and are easy to remove if I want to relocate one.

I use the skateboard tape.. very small pieces. I have never had it damage other rulers.  My friend uses the boat stair tread gripper that she gets at Ace Hardware.  Probably the same stuff.  Anyway, it gets less rough over time.  I don't put it on rulers that I have to slide, like my tri arcs, but for long rulers that tend to be hard to control, it works wonders.

I have put a tape by 3M called Nexcare on my rulers and it has helped a lot, they can still slip with sideways pressure but much more secure than before, and no worry of fabric damage.  It is clear and has a textured finish that helps so they don't slip as much.  I started with it on my rulers for rotary cutting but have now added it to the long arm one's also.  For rotary cutting I have since got a gadget called a slide lock thats used with the ruler and I love it, took some getting use to using but saves my fingers. I forgot to say the 3M Nexcare tape came from the drugstore. Saundra
