K. Szymaszek
I've been working on this quilt and am finally to the background. It is mine so I can do anything. I'm kinda tired of ruler work, but can't think of any freehand that won't detract from the feather handles. Any and all ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, K
Primitive1
I love how you quilted those baskets!! I know you said you are tired of ruler work but straight lines would really contrast and make those baskets stand out….(not what you want to hear….) K. Szymaszek
Thanks Vicki. Do you see straight lines on the diagonal, up and down, side to side or a grid. I've tossed it all around and was hoping to throw it out. But I have to admit, I keep coming up with lines. K
Quilting Heidi
I think cross hatching would look really nice but I know you don't want more ruler work. I think McTavishing would also work. You've already outlined everything with straight lines so I think it would be just fine. I too love how you stitched those baskets.
LisaC
I see cross hatching too, but also think a dense background filler would work; as Heidi suggested because you have outlined everything. It is absolutely gorgeous. What a beauty!
K. Szymaszek
Thanks Ladies for the complements. It seems cross-hatching is the common denominator. I was thinking that originally but seem to have gotten rulered out. I think maybe I will just have to take a deep breath, relax and go for it. delld
Do you have a quiltazoid or Circle Lord board for cross hatching? That is what I used and it worked like a dream. Put that ruler away!
dlnewell
You could do pebbling.....A friend of mine is working on a similar quilt. Your quilting is lovely so far! Can't wait to see it finished.
qltnbe
I am too new to make an educated comment, but I have to say what you have done so far is absolutely outstanding!
Sharond
I would do something that has freehand curved lines, since you have done ruler work already. Can't wait to see the finished quilt.
Primitive1
I was thinking lines at an angle coming from those little blocks you quilted, but I didn't see the border before and so now I agree with the others, crosshatching or easier yet, McTavishing would work well. K. Szymaszek
Thank you all for kind comments and ideas. Believe it or not, I have yet to do McTavishing on a quilt. I've practiced it on paper and fabric and don't like doing it, although I like the way it looks. I'm sure I just need to do it on a quilt and get comfortable with the process. I think I've narrowed it down to crosshatching or pebbles. I don't know but will post a pic when I have it done. Dell, no Circle Lord or Qz, all mark and ruler for me. I have thought about getting one but that's as far as I've gotten.
chrisquilter
I love what you did around the baskets. I especially like how you extended the colored squares with the quilted ones. That looks great!. I can't wait to see the finished quilt!
LisaC
K., I do not know which machine you own but check out Linda Rech's cross hatch rulers and see if they fit your machine. I love mine. www.topperquilttools .com
Mrs.A
That was such an inventive way to handle the quilting of the baskets & handles! I love that you repeated those motifs again in the border. Sorry to say this but I'm with the crowd recommending straight lines as background fill. I would try diagonal lines in one direction in part of the quilt to decide whether that would work or if it needs both directions in a crosshatch. It is hard to imagine the scale of this quilt…how large are the baskets? Double diagonal lines might fill the bill…only in one direction but two parallel lines 1/4 inch apart, then a larger space like 1" or more between the pairs of lines. Please be sure to post photos when you are finished. It's a beautiful quilt! Nancy in Tucson
GMALKB
I use the clear quilt preview paper to draw out a design to audition it for a space. You can lay the paper over your area and see which design seems to fit the best. I've had something in mind, but changed after seeing the preview. K. Szymaszek
Thanks everyone for weighing in. Chris, I can't wait to see it finished too . Lisa, I have a Millie and also have the Westalee tool for crosshatching, but never felt comfortable using it. I am always afraid it will get under my hopping foot. Maybe I just need to check out some utube videos if there are any, and of course, ppp. Nancy, the baskets are 9". It looks like you are in the majority with lines. I hadn't thought of the double lines though. Thanks for your input and support. GMALKB, sorry I don't know your name. What clear paper are you talking about. I use a plexiglass with markers to audition designs but would love another alternative.
LindaSteller
McTavishing, bubbles, just about any background fill. I think the way you've quilted the handles is great, but they are distinctive enough to hold up with any background fill. Scale will be the issue here. If you make the fill small enough, your original design will pop and look lovely, just as you intended it!
GMALKB
Hi..........I'm Linda.......... The Quilter's Preview Paper come on a roll and is like a thick Sarah Wrap............you draw on it with a dry erase marker and lay it over your quilt to audition a design. I have a Quiltazoid and have traced some of the design boards on to the preview paper to see if it will look right on my project or if it will fit in a block, etc. I just bought a roll from Erica's.com You can leave the design on the paper or rub it off with a cloth and use the paper again. K. Szymaszek
Thank you Linda S. I think your right, the scale of background is key. Thanks. Hey Linda, aka GMALKB, nice to meet you. Thanks for getting back to me. I will check out Erica's.com for the preview paper.
GMALKB
I've been on the forum for a long time, but recently changed passwords and got locked out of my original page! Sheri Butler
IMHO it needs to be some sort of straight-line quilting. Even if you took a blue washout pen and drew squares or triangles, or whatever all over the background, then fill those in with straight-line quilting, you will knock it out of the park!!
