Design help appreciated

Recommended Posts

Thank you all for kind comments and ideas. Believe it or not, I have yet to do McTavishing on a quilt. I've practiced it on paper and fabric and don't like doing it, although I like the way it looks. I'm sure I just need to do it on a quilt and get comfortable with the process. I think I've narrowed it down to crosshatching or pebbles. I don't know but will post a pic when I have it done.

Dell, no Circle Lord or Qz, all mark and ruler for me. I have thought about getting one but that's as far as I've gotten.

That was such an inventive way to handle the quilting of the baskets & handles!  I love that you repeated those motifs again in the border.  Sorry to say this but I'm with the crowd recommending straight lines as background fill.  I would try diagonal lines in one direction in part of the quilt to decide whether that would work or if it needs both directions in a crosshatch.  It is hard to imagine the scale of this quilt…how large are the baskets?  Double diagonal lines might fill the bill…only in one direction but two parallel lines 1/4 inch apart, then a larger space like 1" or more between the pairs of lines.  Please be sure to post photos when you are finished.  It's a beautiful quilt!   Nancy in Tucson

I use the clear quilt preview paper to draw out a design to audition it for a space.  You can lay the paper over your area and see which design seems to fit the best.   I've had something in mind, but changed after seeing the preview.

Thanks everyone for weighing in.

Chris, I can't wait to see it finished too :) .

Lisa, I have a Millie and also have the Westalee tool for crosshatching, but never felt comfortable using it. I am always afraid it will get under my hopping foot. Maybe I just need to check out some utube videos if there are any, and of course, ppp.

Nancy, the baskets are 9". It looks like you are in the majority with lines. I hadn't thought of the double lines though. Thanks for your input and support.

GMALKB, sorry I don't know your name. What clear paper are you talking about. I use a plexiglass with markers to audition designs but would love another alternative.

McTavishing, bubbles, just about any background fill.  I think the way you've quilted the handles is great, but they are distinctive enough to hold up with any background fill.  Scale will be the issue here.  If you make the fill small enough, your original design will pop and look lovely, just as you intended it!

Hi..........I'm Linda..........   :)  The Quilter's Preview Paper come on a roll and is like a thick Sarah Wrap............you draw on it with a dry erase marker and lay it over your quilt to audition a design.   I have a Quiltazoid and have traced some of the design boards on to the preview paper to see if it will look right on my project or if it will fit in a block, etc.    I just bought a roll from Erica's.com    You can leave the design on the paper or rub it off with a cloth and use the paper again.
