A memory quilt made with hats??

Recommended Posts

I wondered if any of you have ever made a memory quilt with hats....ball caps in particular. If so, how did you feature the logo on the front of the hat, how did you attach them, and any potential issues that I need to watch for?

Also, the customer wants 'puffy' batting in this quilt....what kind/brand would you recommend? I normally use warm & natural, but that was too flat for her.

Thanks so much for your wise counsel! ;)

Denise :)

For puff, try poly. You can even use two layers to get the result your customer wants.

As for attaching the logos--many you will not be able to quilt through/over because of the thickness. If you're making this for her, you can stitch each logo to the separate blocks before piecing them together, if your DSM is able to handle the thickness. Then you'll need to avoid them as you longarm quilt it.

I'd probably leave the logos off and attach them by hand after the quilting is finished, just like other embellishments that will get in the way of the hopping foot. Gluing them or using a fusible will help keep them on while you stitch them. It'll be labor-intensive so be sure you're charging enough to cover the hand-work.

I had to retime my machine after quilting a memory quilt made from those canvas bags given away at conventions. Thank goodness, it was not a huge quilt or caused more damage than it did.  I will not do another one made from anything thicker than a regular t shirt. My machine is too expensive to risk it for the pittance I make quilting. I would not do it even if it were my own hats.

Linda, this may be a really dumb question, but how can you leave off the logos if they are already part of the hat?  Aren't they already stitched onto the hats?  I have never done anything like that and I am a bit confused.

Hi Peggy. The logos will need to be removed from the crown to be used.

It depends on the way the logo is attached. If it's embroidered on, it'll need to be cut out and the edges finished (zig-zagged or serged) before being attached. If the logos are printed (painted) on they'll also need to be removed and edges finished. If the logos are patches and easily removable from the crown, they can be used as-is since the edges are finished. As others have mentioned, a lot of us would turn this project down. Too much can go wrong and there is a lot of prep-work. Not easy to get a good hourly rate doing a project like this... JMHO.
