Is Anyone Going to MQX Midwest in Springfield?

Recommended Posts

Congrats Valerie for being juried in. I also will have 4 entries in the wearable categories. The completion in this category is VERY tough. They haven't had a wearable categories for several years so all of the power house garment entries are entered. Linda Thiefoldt, Birgit Schuller from Germany, Gilbert Muniz (a couture clothing designer), and Kathy Knapp(she often wins the Hoffman fabric challenge). I will be honored to hang in their company!

ongratulations Jennifer for your entries in MQX.  I'll be looking for your entries as well as Valeries.  I'm sure there are other APQS Forum members juried in MQX - congratulations to all, and good luck.  I'll be busy taking pics in between classes.  :)

Norma yay!  Thank you so much, I would be grateful if you would take some photos while you're there!!  I am finishing up that monster quilt that I've been working on, and then I'll PM you some details!

Jennifer - I saw that you had four entries!  AH!  I have something in wearables accessories - not an ensemble.  I'm new and green to entering shows so I'm one of the ones who's just happy to be there!!!!!!!!!!  LOL!  :)

Well, we will both be in good company! Only the judges know what will happen! The MQX show is very late in getting their shipping entries letter out! I just got my e-mail today, Friday. I have to ship my entries on Tuesday (Labou Day is getting inthe way) to get my entries there by the September 9th deadline! They are cutting it close!

Jennifer - oh my goodness you are so RIGHT about MQX being a bit late with the arrival deadline!  I am sending mine out Tuesday as well - I live in Ohio so I think if I send them two day priority they will get there a day or two.  Good thing my quilt was finished...I just need to put a hanging sleeve on it and label over the weekend...do you label your wearable pieces?  I suppose I ought to go look at the instructions...I don't have a label on them as of right now but I'm guessing I should.

I had woven labels with my name on them made. They were very reasonable priced. Then I found a site that printed labels so I did a set with my address and phone number on it. I zig zag the 2 together and sew them on every piece of clothing in an ensemble. If I am thinking ahead enough I sew the labels on as I am making the facings. I sometimes use them for a quick quilt labels too. They were well worth investing in.

ALSO! I am going to call them on Tuesday because I can't figure out their return shipping fees. I entered a purse, a vest, a jacket, and a full outfit...4 entries. They seem to want $18 for the first small quilt and then $15 for each additional item. That's $63 for UPS ground shipping! It costs me from $12 to $20 to ship 1 box containing all my entries to the show. I am hoping they will let me ship back in at least 2 boxes in stead of 4 with a small purse in 1 big box!

I am also going to mention the tight shipping schedule.....very gently, of course.... They do an immense amount of work to put on a quilt show!

I think there were some other things going on to push the deadline for us to ship back...and also remember the entry deadline was extended by two weeks so I bet that this date was planned long ago but when the entry deadline was pushed forward, the ship by date remained the same.  This is only the second show I've entered so it's all new to me and I couldn't compare it to much else...but I can say that they really do make MQX fun and exciting to participate in!   :)

It is good to talk to someone else who enjoys competition! I get the impression that a lot of my quilting friends just think I am strange or that I like to brag. I just enjoy sharing my quilting with others and improving my skills to compete with the best quilters.

It might also be a genetic thing. My father quilts and enters his county fair, my older daughter trains her 2 dogs for dog shows, and my youngest daughter makes a living training show hores and travels to horse shows all over the country. Go figure!

Haha Jennifer!  You are really amazing at what you do - I can understand why you like competition!!!  :)  I am still learning...I think striving to do better with each project has helped me grow and working towards competitions gives me a standard to attempt to reach...also I'm a total nerd fan and it's a thrill to know my quilts are hanging with the big quilting greats!  :)

I understand what you mean about your quilting friends...I am 33 and started quilting at 23...so while my friends were at the bar and whoopin' it up I was at home sewing!  I'm totally artsy and creatively driven...in the past and still to this day I spend a lot of time painting, drawing, sketching...so I am compelled to make things in some way or another.  It's a need like food or breathing for me...my Mother and I have had these great long conversations about how miserable we would be if we couldn't just make things...I have to make stuff!!!!  For the past decade it's been pushing myself as to what I can do with quilting...and every time I succeed or get a little bit better it makes me want to push it even farther and see what else I can achieve!  I love the whole excitement of show quilting not only for the validation of competition...but also...you work SO STINKIN' hard and long on these quilts...that I  really want them to be seen and appreciated!  :)

Oh! You could be my daughter! I am 61 and have a 26 year old horse trainer daughter that is so talented on a horse...she is in my profile picture. The other daughter is a high school French teacher and is a passionate knitter with two sweet little girls. She does crafts with them all the time.

My mother and her mother were always doing hand crafts, crouched table cloths, knitting, sewing any new craft that came along! My father was a shop teacher and wood worker who became a quilter! Now he is always doing hand work at 85!

I just have ideas popping into m y head that I want to sew or quilt. I now describe myself as more of a quilt artist than just a quilter. Don't anyone get mad at me! I love all my quilter friends and all the wonderful cuddly quilts they make!! I make cuddly quilts too for my family. I just like to stretch my imagination to new frontiers and quilt something new and different, then see how it does compared to others in front of a quilt judge! Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't,

Hahaha Jennifer - "Oh!  You could be my daughter!"  If I had a nickel for every time I'd heard that in the quilting realm!!  HA!  Yes, I started out young.  I have been sewing as long as I can remember...and it's even kind of amazing because when I was in school I had planned on going to college for art...well, as they often do, plans changed and instead of college I ended up marrying and starting a family!  In the beginning...sewing was a necessary evil that I loved being able to do but wasn't all that crazy about.  Then I discovered quilts!  As our family grew and our single income stayed the same, I was able to get creative and find ways to earn a side income from my little quilting hobby that had started out as a way to inexpensively keep me busy while home with small children and the Husband was away working long hours.

I don't know where exactly art and sewing merged but I found myself in love with these fantastic amazing show quilts and the works of art the created out of fabric and thread.  I still really don't know exactly where this whole quilting thing is taking me, but for now I'm just having a great time and starting up my long arm business has allowed me to experiment with my art in ways that I never would have had the opportunity otherwise.  It's been a real blessing!

I so relate to you having ideas coming all of the time - more than likely we might ever actually accomplish...but I sure do try!

I sent my entries off to MQX yesterday - eeeeep!
