NQR - I'm still here

Recommended Posts

My surgery was scheduled for this morning but apparently I decided to have uncontrolled high blood pressure and they ended up cancelling it. I got as far as the operating room where the anesthesiologist gave me some IV boluses of two different BP meds, but my BP was still 190/111. I've had a migraine off and on since Saturday and I wonder if this played a factor, along with nerves? I didn't feel nervous and was relieved to be finally taking care of my problem. I guess my body felt differently. So I'm still around, wishing like heck my headache would go away. I'm pending an appointment to try and get my BP under control so we can reschedule surgery (I've been on BP meds since my late 30s). Feeling kinda blue but I totally understand why they cancelled the surgery. Of course, now that I'm home, my BP is back in a more normal range. Thankfully.

Mine got really high before my first breast surgery.  The staff had me on a gurney behind the nurses station so they could watch me when the anesthesiologist came in.  He was all worked up about it being so high so I looked at him and said, "You're a dr. for Christ's sakes just give me something to lower it and get this over with."  Evidently whatever he gave me worked.  I still had to repeat the surgery two weeks later because the surgeon missed the margins, but they understood medical people make my BP rise...lol.  That's what being a nurse for 30 years will do for you.  AACCKKKK!!!

Hang in and stay calm.  Take your meds.  You'll have your surgery in no time.

God's blessings and in His will, the surgery will happen in His time..

relax in Him, let Him worry.. He really will take worry, when we let him.

I too often use to say, Here God, take it!  NO!!!  Give it back, give it Back!"

It feels tremendous to really let go, and Let God.

Oma, I wondered if it was the "white coat syndrome," too, but my head hasn't been feeling very well since I took Norco Friday ... I'm almost certain acetaminophen gives me migraines and I wondered if that factored -- no clue tho! With this surgery they recline the patient (a Trendelenburg position) to get the intestines out of the way. With all that pressure on my head for what the doctor said would be too long because my uterus is too big to be quick about the surgery, they said I might have a stroke. Ugh. Dang, I wish I could have told them to get on with it. LOL My BP decided to go up again last night. I'm going to see my regular doc today -- the one I don't really like because they leave things hanging, like my potassium being low and they don't tell me about it?? And now I have anemia, too.

Rita, I'm with you. I'm leaving it to God.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and thoughts!! I'm going to get myself taken care of soon, I hope!

Bonnie sorry to hear you had problems with your BP.  You're headache is likely related to the high BP.  Make sure they look you over good and get your meds corrected.  I've been round and round with MIL's BP meds.  She had a dry cough that came on all of a sudden and I suggested her BP meds being the cause.  She said no way because she had been on them for years.  After a couple of months of that annoying cough I finally said, "Well lets just try to change your BP meds and see what happens."  Sure enough less than a week later the cough was gone.  She too has very low potassium and they said that can cause heart problems.  Hang in there!  Will keep you in my prayers.

Heidi, I a similar problem with "the cough" when I first started BP meds about 10 years ago. Mine wasn't a cough, but constant choking, even on saliva! One time I woke up in the middle of the night, choking so badly I herniated my C5-6 disc. That was miserable. My mom had the low potassium thing that landed her in the ER. She had to get intravenous potassium for a few weeks -- I guess potassium is slow to return to the body from what she tells me. It's time for a new doctor but in the meantime, I'm going to give this one another chance and maybe complain LOUDER. lol

I don't know if one can call it "white coat syndrome" or not. I just think they make me mad...lol.  I tell them it's because they make an appointment with me then leave me sitting in the waiting room for over an hour and then the first thing they want to do it weigh me.  It's a crock of you know what.  There is only a handful of reasons you would need to weigh an adult every time they come into the office and I don't fit any of those criteria.  Most of the time it's just for a government study.  I used to have to ask every person coming into the ER following an auto accident whether or not they had a cell phone and if they were using it at the time of the accident.  This was before everyone had cell phones.  Like the mid 1990's.  That's how they know what the different percentages for these things are.  Like what the obesity rate is or the percentage of auto accidents caused by cell phone usage, etc.  Leave me out of it.  My last appointment I walked out after an hour and a half of waiting past my appointment time.  No emergency going on as far as I could tell and if there was then notify the people in the waiting room and give them the option of rescheduling. I deserve the same respect I showed them by showing up 10 minutes early.  Hospitals and OR rooms are different.  They sort of have you between a rock and a hard spot so they get to make the rules.

If you're anesthesiologist wanted to wait because your BP was too high then trust him and do what he says.  He's educated and experienced and that's why we don't just let any old guy off the street do it.  You want the best possible outcome and to get that you have to go in with the best set of circumstances.  Try to relax and get everything settled down.  It's going to be fine.

I think its so inconsiderate of the medical profession to tell us well just relax and try to get the blood pressure down. Right let me just do that right now!!! I layed in hospital with a migraine for 3 days until the neurologist came in and said hey this lady is a coffee drinker have you given her coffee since shes been in here their answer "no we didn't think that would make a difference. A few hours later headache gone and surgery was back on. Bonnie hope things go better for you soon.

Right, Sylvia?!? But I'm okay with going back to the OR, feeling very relaxed about it, so no worries. Like you, I'm not great at being a patient, not much experience in that department. I am good at nursing others back to health. It must be a woman thing.

Oma, I had a female anesthesiologist (Go, Girl Power LOL). The times of males being dominant in the field are quickly adjusting to evening out a little. I don't mind male docs though. My OB/GYN is male ... I actually kind of prefer male doctors. Not sure why.

I went to the doctor yesterday and they switched one of my meds. OMGOSH I started feeling much better late last and no more headache. What a relief.
