Interchangeable Feet

I haven't been on the forum for ages but decided to check in and see what's up.  Back in November there was a lady selling her 2006 George; the quoted price to include closed toe, open toe and high profile interchangeable feet.  I was under the impression that the interchangeable feet were only available on the newer models or if George were returned to the factory for an open toe foot to be installed.

Could someone give me the skinny on interchangeable feet for George and how does one go about changing the feet if that is an option.  I'd love to have both the open-toe and high profile (for ruler work) feet as options I could use at home.  I purchased George in 2010 and he, too, is in the heavy laminate cabinet.  (He has gray "hair")  Thank you.

My understanding is you can buy the parts from APQS and do this yourself.  If you want to save the old foot you have to remove the hook and loosen the hook shaft collar and slide the shaft a little back into the gearbox to get the old hopping foot out.  Or you can hacksaw the old foot in two and not have to loosen the collar.  I am not sure whether the hook has to come off on the second method.  I am sure someone else who knows better will add.

From speaking with Amy, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined or have someone that is you can upgrade an older model George to the split foot hopping foot.  You have to put in the new split foot, and change out a bushing or two.  Amy can provide you documents that explain exactly what you have to do.  Once you are done, you will have to retime the machine.  I was told if you can handle the upgrade, you can handle the retiming of your machine.

Below is the different feet that Amy sent me.  As I remember, you can buy the kit, just one foot, or any foot combination you might like to own.

When I had my (old style) George converted to the split shaft so that it could utilize the interchangeable feet, I was scared to do it myself.  Dave Jones was in town doing service calls.  He retrofitted mine with ease.  Any dealers or techs in your area?

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the replies thus far.  Has anyone used a Dremel tool to cut out enough of the original foot for better viewing of the work area?  I had my husband do this on one of my Bernina feet to "convert" it to an open toe, but that foot was not as heavy and thick as the original George foot.

If anyone has tried this, could you briefly explain the difficulty in doing so and perhaps post a photo of the "after" appearance.

Thanks again.
