chickenscratch
I originally planned to use lime green on the whole thing, but then I got to thinking that lime green on the pink and pink on the lime green would be cool. She is paying for custom. It is for a teenage girl. What do y'all think about thread color? It will have feathers in the white part of the pinwheels, swirly twirly things in the colored part of the pin wheel. Long flames in the wonky side peices and a flip flop narrow feather in the outer border. Not sure yet about the narrow border right around the pinwheels. Probably alternating C curls or something.. Sheagatzi
I thought pink or green when i saw the top - if she's paying custom and you are up for thread changes, go for it! otherwise I think either colour will be great!
ffq-lar
I echo Andrea--pink on the green and green on the pink--very cute! But if you want to use one thread color on all the pinwheels (including the white vanes) you could opt for shiny gold. Just a bit of bling, ya know! Enchanted Quilting
Cool pattern...I haven't seen wonky pinwheels before. If you are up to the thread changes...go for it. Otherwise I would go for a grey or dusty purple to go with each. I do like Linda's bling idea too.
BBB
Teen girls grow into adults--skip the pink! I really like the gold suggestion! Extends it's life as a holiday quilt for a lifetime!
chickenscratch
Need more advice on thread colors This is the feathered border, as it is right now. I want to add pink accents or echoes to these feathers to tie it all together. What would be the best way to do that?
anniemueller
I'd switch colors, lime and pink. The gold sounds fun too. I love doing feathers with two or three colors. If you're ok with letting the thread build up on the vine (why can't I think of the word for that today?) stitch over the vine and just inside, maybe 1/8" or a little more away from the original feathers. A la Patsy Thompson. I'm not sure about echoing outside with pink, that might stand out too much. I'm keen to read what the pros think.
chickenscratch
I like the look of the pink accents in the feathers, but I don't know if the feathers are showing up well enough. The green thread keeps blending into the batik parts. This is one block that is mostly done. See how the green doesn't stand out. Any suggestions. Also, really BAD batting pokies on the back. I changed needles, relaxed the tension on the rollers, don't know what else to do. Backing is green batik. I think the batting she sent is that soft and crafty from Joann. It wasn't in a package, just folded up in the box with the quilt. It is very thin and very soft and limp.
chickenscratch
Does anybody have any opinions? Help please. I need to get this done today
anniemueller
The pink pops so nicely. I'd like to see the feathers done in all pink. With the green feathers already stitched, you could try outlining them close to the green or echoing in pink. I've had bad pokies with batik backings too. I think because the batik fabric is so tightly woven, the needle breaks more fabric threads instead of going in between them on looser fabrics. I'm sorry I can't go check my notes fast enough. I think I've gone to the smallest needle that works when I have a batik backing. Either that or bigger....geez, sorry. Experiment with needle size off the quilt top. Good luck today Teresa! Busy Quilting
Can you spray the backing fabric with a solution of fabric softener in water to make it softer and see if the pokies are less.
chickenscratch
Lyn, I hadn't thought of that. I'm afraid to try though. I can tell it hasn't been washed and it is green batik. Do you think it would run onto the quilt top? I'd hate to ruin that white fabric.
pumpkinpatchquilter
I have started asking clients to pre-wash batik if it's used for a backing. It does seem to soften things up and quilting is a lot smoother...but my needle still struggles to get through seamed batik tops. I have no suggestion with the pokies other than to try and reign them in with a needle by hand after quilting. I had to do this with a baby quilt that had a dark blue backing and stark white batting poking through. It was awful. Also I noticed that a light colored thread would hide the pokies a little better...I mean not that I WANT them in the first place but you're SO far into the quilting on this! I think the quilting looks great!
