mlsa3
A little background first. I have some of the nicest neighbors. There are 3 of us that retired the same year. One is a few years younger than I am and one is a few years older than I am. A couple of times a week we meet in the middle of the street and solve the worlds problems. Last year when I had my heart attack and open heart surgery, I couldn't mow the grass and my two neighbors wouldn't let me hire someone to do it for me. They mowed my grass every week for about 2 months until the doctors said I was able to do it again. Since I wasn't allowed to pick up more than 5 lbs (everything weighs more than 5 lbs) Mike would come over and take out my garbage, change the litter box and do any lifting that needed to be done. My wife has had 4 shoulder surgeries and can't pick up much since her shoulder is in such bad shape. So one day last week Mike and his wife Suzi came over to see my new quilting garage. I've slowly been moving things in and decorating. I'm now in the process of putting up shelves and organizing my stash. Suzi saw some of the quilts I've done and especially liked the memory quilt I made for my wife. I had scanned pictures she chose and made the quilt using an Ohio Star pattern. She also designed the designs she wanted quilted. So Suzi asked me if I would make her a memory quilt like that. Mike asked how much. Will $500 take care of it? I said, "$500 for what?" He said to make her a quilt like that. As I said they have been so good to us so I said, "I'll tell you what".....before I could say anything else Mike says, "Now don't start that....we will pay you for the quilt...just tell me how much." I said, "Just pay for all of the supplies and let's just go from there." I would really like to do a quilt for them to pay them back for their goodness and it would give me more practice on my machine without costing me anything. Mike said again, "you are not doing it for free." It just made me feel good that they thought my piecing and quilting was good enough that they would pay me to make one for them. Neher-in-law5
Great neighbors, go ahead and make the quilt for you to be happy. But allow them to pay for the supplies so they can also feel like they have something to give. It is always good when others realize that there is a cost to our gifts.
