Couching foot

Recommended Posts

At the Tech Training I went to in July, Dane from Arizona explained how he couches. It sounds cool! I need to try this!

He stacked up a few bobbins, with heavier threads wound on them, on the rear thread holder and put a cross-wound cone of thread on top. The bobbin threads are pulled up through the cone so they get delicately wrapped by the cone thread. He treats all the threads as one and uses a larger needle to accommodate this thread bundle. Where he wants to start couching he pulls maybe 2 feet of this twisted thread through the needle, tacks it in place and pulls it towards him. He then couches with the thread bundle over the extra thread he pulled through the needle for a nice heavy coaching effect. No special feet needed.

That sound interesting Heidi, but I can't even get a mental picture of what that sounds like.  This Handiquilter set up is amazing though.  Look at the youtube video.  They even pulled yarn through and stitched it down. I can picture gold braiding, specialty yarns, cording, and lots of other things being added to quilts.

You might check YouTube. Dawn and Myrna both have videos on how to couch with the APQS machines. Basically you stitch a zigzag with your longarm and the crouching fibers are caught all of the time. Monofilament is good for a top thread and maybe a bobbin thread. You don't have too go back and re-stitch areas. Watch the videos and let me know what you think.

The zig-zag couching technique is fine when you have a straight line or a gentle curve, but I'd like to experiment with actual quilting with the thicker yarns. Karlee Porter does some fun graffiti quilting and she also has a few pieces that are couched. (demo in the you tube video link)

I do wonder if APQS will make one of these feet ... so far both Innova and HandiQuilter have them.

I've asked for this 3 yrs ago. Thought something was in "the works", but I think it fell thru a crack.

Would love a set of 3 feet with 3 different sized holes in front to accomodate 3 sizes of yarns.

There is an extended holder for sale, I believe in Nancy Zieman's catalogue, would be GREAT to hold the thicker threads that hang forward and on top of our machine heads.
