Bobbin thread

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new to long arm quilting. I just took a project off my machine last night and there are places on the back of the quilt where my tension is pretty bad.....just little sections of 5 or 6".

So, I am wondering if it is because I used different types of thread for the top and the bobbin. When quilting on my sewing machine I have used embroidery thread in my bobbin so I decided to do that on my long arm too.  The top thread was a generic cotton.

Question:  How important is it that the top and bottom thread types match?

thanks!

Nancy

As long as you tension is set properly, so the knot is sandwiched in the middle of the batting, it should not matter if you use different threads in the top and bottom.  When you are first starting out, some might suggest you use the same thread to reduce issues while you are learning.  Once you are comfortable making tension chances, and moving the machine head, etc., then try different things.  Though as long as you are happy with your results, do whatever you like.  Best of luck.

PS:  If you post pictures of your tension issues, the real experts can probably give you a few suggestions to improve your results.
