micajah Posted July 29, 2016 Report Share Posted July 29, 2016 Hi Marsha, Top stitches lying flat usually means the top tension is too tight or the bottom is too loose. Try adjusting the top tension by loosening it first as that is the easiest to fix. It's pulling up too tight and lying flat because the bottom tension can't pull it down into the batting. When you loosen it, the bottom can pull it down into the batting and correct the flat threads. If you start fiddling with both top and bottom, you are going to mess it all up. I DID that once and was almost in tears before I finally loosened all tensions and worked back to a good tension on both top and bottom.
