Quilting on Fusible Skipped Stitches

Recommended Posts

I've been quilting for a long time and I used to not have problems quilting over fusible applique.  Recently, I've seen a lot of animal pictorial quilts like this one below, all fusible, no stitching and more than one layer is common.  Stitching looks great until to try to sew from front to back and then none of the stitches catch.  I've compensated by starting and stopping and only moving from back to front when necessary but I've got a quilt coming up where the customer wants pebbles in the applique and that technique isn't going to lend itself to starting and stopping.  My question, how do I compensate for the fusible so that I don't get skipped stitches from moving from front to back of the machine?  Adjustments to needle size, timing, needle angle?  Thanks for the help.

Very pretty quilt!  What size of needle are you using and what thread?  Is it so think that you need to raise your hopping foot?

I recently had a quilt with multiple layers of heavy fusible applique. It was made 10 years before I received it and some applique was loose so I ironed and stitched it all back on as I quilted it.   It's always an honor to quilt something so beautiful, but also a challenge sometimes.  It definitely took some effort getting a good stitch. I didn't like the holes my 4.0 needle made but couldn't use the 3.5 unless there were only 2-3 layers and I went real slowly.  I used Magna Glide bobbins and 100# silk, or mono, for the top thread to heavily quilt it.

Our machines can quilt anything even leather.  Could be a few things; needle, thread, needle bar height (hopping foot), etc.  Did they leave the fusible under the entire applique piece or just around the edge?  This should be workable, you may want to bring it to Dawn's attention?
