I haven't used it much but I think the trick is to back the upper tension way off and maybe use only two of the thre holes in the guide above the tension.  After you thread the machine pull the thread through the needle towards the rear and release,  if the thread springs back like a cork screw the tension is still too tight.  Also slow down so the needle doesn't get so hot, it could be melting the thread as well.

Thanks. I have made some adjustments like loosening the tension and only going in one of the guides and out another. It's much better but still not easy or pleasant. I also discovered I need an encoder wheel. That will fix the problem I think. I am just trying to do it on manual. Probably not a good choice.
