meg_marsh
Ok - am going to use Hobbs 80/20 (because I have it) with the wool - 80/20 will be on the bottom... Question - which side of the Hobbs touches the backing (is down) & how do I tell? Want to get this loaded and started!! thanks!!
witha'K'quilting
I always place the outside of the hobbs 80/20 to the backing. So, the inside...when unfolded goes towards the top. Remember, this doesn't mean that I do it correctly...but I do not get pokies this way. Hope this helps!
witha'K'quilting
What quilt are you working on Meg? Are we going to get to see it?
meg_marsh
Am finally getting to do the wedding quilt - an irish chain. Will post when done. Already took the batting out of the package and put in dryer with wet cloth to puff up - so.... won't know which side was the up/down. The 2 sides look a little different - one is a tad smoother (I believe the scrim side) and the other has softer little bumps (I would think the all cotton side........... so now what:o
witha'K'quilting
I put the bumpier side up towards the top and the smooth side down towards the backing.
meg_marsh
that's what I would have done - just wasn't sure....... don't use Hobbs but I really wanted the wool to have a bit more stability so it lays really flat when done........ thanks bunches!! witha'K'quilting
I do not use it often either. but I do find I get almost no pokies this way. I use a 3.5 needle too. You are welcome. Have a good evening.
meg_marsh
Thanks - all is loaded and I got just a little done - felt good to get started. Stayed with the #4 needle and it seems ok.
Quilting Heidi
I have Hobbs and don't use it often but I always open it up and put inside down. I'm probably doing it wrong!
LinneaMarie
I was told (by whom, I can't 'member, maybe Dawn C in a class) to put the "dimples" side up, and the "pokies" side down to the backing. They said this is because the pokies are from the needle punching. I've not had any trouble doing it this way?? Go figure. Maybe Dawn will chime in and tell us if it was she who told me. Or if that is right?? I don't like Hobbs because of the feel of the scrim I think. Feels yucky to me. I do love Quilters Dream, and I am going to try Legacy here shortly. Katydids
I use Hobbs 80/20 all the time and do it the same way as LinneaMarie. Dimple side up as this is how the needle punching is done. same with the other brands that are needle punched. Dimple side up.

ramona-quilter
So Meg, after all that hassle with the QD wool, you are not going to use it? Huh? Or is it still in Kent or lost in space?
lizziesgirl
This is nice info to know. So let's see if I can try to remember this, I don't have dimples on my face so must be bottom's up....LOL
Corey
Hi Peg, I love Hobbs wool quilts nicely, dimple/rough side up and smoother side down. While I am here, hello to all and good to see Ramona Quilter. Corey
meg_marsh
Linda - using both ..... the wool on the top and the 80/20 on the bottom............ I just wanted a tab bit more body for the quilt and knowing it will be used up north, not worried about being too warm.......... thanks again. Am almost done - one more day and then off the frame and time to get the label made and the binding on!!!!
