This quilt is the second to last of a series of quilts I bartered for a sewing machine. A customer of mine won a Bernina Active 210 sewing machine at a local shop hop. She had just purchased a machine and did not need this one. I was looking for a new machine, so a barter was born. Quilting = Machine. Great deal for both of us.

This quilt made me think of the ocean, so I tried to convey the feeling of water by placing the large swirls among the feather meanders. I put feather "waves" in the border and the design was born. The batting is a poly-cotton and it was quilted with superior rainbow with bottom line in the bottom.8737353043_a849987cf4.jpg

Your combo of designs turned out sooooo well! The quilting shows up really well and looks super! How in the world did you determine a "price?" And, who suggested the deal? I'd like to swap for housekeeping!!!!

Such cool and restful colors! I really like the combo feather/swirls and piano keys on the border. And I also really like the "random" arrangement of the blocks - makes the quilt top visually very interesting.

Sylvia, we were at a quilting retreat and I was complaining about my machine. She was sitting right behind me. Actually she suggested the barter. We looked at at the retail price of the machine and then she gave me a discount I could not refuse. We actually went over to her house and got the machine that day. It was still in the box! lol. Everyone at the retreat shared in my delight at having a new machine!

I kept track of the cost for the quilts she brought me until I had "paid" for the machine. I have one more quilt to finish the barter, a shop hop sampler. I will custom quilt it for her as a thank you for a good deal!

I think a dollar for dollar barter would work for housecleaning. Just offer to take whatever amount you would pay for the cleaning off the quilting bill. That would be fair to both of you. I am assuming you housekeeper is a quilter!

Love the texture your quilt designs gave this quilt! Did you just put feathers on one side of the vine where the other side is swirls? Neat idea. Also like the design in the border with half feathers and half piano key.

I am bartering quilting for quilt labels for my quilts since I don't have an embroidery machine. Now if I could figure out how to trade out putting those hanging sleeves on...our guild show is in July.

Cindy, Well... I started out placing the swirls at the beginning of the feather, sometimes at the end, and tucking them into the curve of the feather. As I worked through the quilt, the placement just sort of happened whenever there seemed to be the right place to stick in a swirl. I'm kind of a loose quilter, so I really random is good for me! I really enjoyed the bartering and feel like it was a very fair deal.

Beautiful quilting! Love the border feathers with piano keys. Love the swirls in the inner border. Love the all over. Love it all!

I barter for hand binding work. It's a great deal for us. We don't even keep track of the time spent.

Don't we just love what we do? I am blessed that I get to spend every day doing something that brings me such joy. My customers are wonderful people and many have become good friends. Is it quilting that draws these kind hearts? Or kind hearts that are drawn to quilting. It has been pretty stressful for me the last couple of weeks and it seems I find myself turning to this forum as a safe landing spot. Thanks to all of you kind and generous people.

I love everything about this, the fabrics, the pattern, your lovely quilting. What an awesome opportunity for you. You got a new machine and gained a customer.

I'd like to barter for housecleaning also, but I'd also quilt for free fabric and batting.
