Ruthy67
I know it is best to use a one piece backing for a quilt, but if you have to piece, is it best to piece it horizontally or vertically? I thought it was vertically and then I saw somewhere I think where someone said do it horizontally.
T Row Studio
defiantly horizontal this will spread out the seam thickness , if you run it vertical the seam will all be in one place causing the back to be different tensions on the sides it will be floppy hope this helps

Neher-in-law5
Ruthy67, Are you quilting this on a frame machine or on George or another sit-down option? If a frame, yes, the horizontal works best in the quilting process. If using George, it doesn't make a difference. I use the vertical in that case because in the use of the quilt on a bed the seam doesn't get tugged and pulled with it vertically like it does with a horizontal seam. JenniferBernard
When I do over alls, I put quilts on my Millie sideways many times because I have to stop less often to roll. Then ideally the seam should run parallel to the bars. In actuality, I run the seam to use the least amount of fabric for the backing. Fabric is just too expensive to buy more just to get the seams going a certain way! Many of my clients do the same thing. When the seam is running vertically up the rollers I really spend time smoothing the seam tightly around the roller. Working extra hard at tightening the seam and leaving the rest of the backing looser. This really helps prevent baggy edges. I spend about an hour or more loading a big quilt on the machine because I want everything tight, straight, square, and smooth. My wrists get tird of smoothing! I haven't had a backing touch science I was a newbie!
Bonnie H
I can't seem to copy and paste the response I made in a different category about using batting to help when you have no choice but to load a backer in the "unfriendly" direction. Here's the link, if anyone wants to read it. Http://forum.apqs.com/index.php?/topic/36060-pieced-backing/?p=498027
