The Quilted Petal
Customer has brought me a couple of very old quilt tops that were hand appliqued and hand embroidered. They have tiny dots printed on them (I assume that is a guide for quilting) however they are not coming out with any type of cleaning. Any suggestions?? They are a dark blue/blackish color and fabric is thin white. I haven't quilted yet. Would normally use a very light thread and low loft batting. Wondering if a higher loft would hide these dots if I can't get them out. Thanks for any suggestions!
Zora
I did one using Dream Puff. You really had to be up close to see the dots. Once it is quilted and bound immerse in cold water. That's why I like poly batting. It will still have that just quilted look even after the dots are soaked out.
Mary Beth
I cannot remember the year, but if this quilt top is from a certain time frame, like before the 1970's, the markings may not come out. She will just need to love it dots and all. Sometimes, a machine washing will take them out.
Corey
Some old quilt tops made from kits from the 20s or 30s will not come off. I have a couple from my husbands granny, it is permanent, it's ok, adds charm from its period, I was told.
Merryjo2003
Ditto Corey! I have a baby quilt from the 30's that I quilted. It's been washed twice and the marks are still there. Luckily, I followed the lines! You can still see the dots, but like Corey, I think it's part of the charm.
dbams
Be careful washing that embroidery floss, as those colors often run.
CrazyAboutQuilting
Another thing to watch out for is to make sure that you don't iron those markings or they won't come out. The heat from the iron will set them permanently.. So if you need to press the top before quilting, do it very carefully......
kkey1030
Why not just stitch a French knot over every. single. dot? Just kidding---I'd go nuts! My mom did a lot of pillow cases and table cloths in cross stitch when I was a kid, and the pattern was printed with little "x's" where she needed to stitch. You can totally see the printed X's but the pillow cases are still charming.
