Judi
So - Maybe this sounds silly - but I am looking for a method or way to make a Quilt show Ribbon, or type of Ribbon - Something! We are having our Deep Valley Quilters Quilt Show - called this year "Oh, My Stars!" I am one of the co- chairs of this adventure..... it is happening this coming weekend. I SO can't wait for it to finally be here and get started!! (Sorry Birthday block people - I have many here and started - some almost ready to mail - what a NUTS time this is!!) I only have one more quilt to finish for the show :mad::cool: Now as to the Ribbon - we are have the 2 Mayors - one from Mankato and the one from North Mankato come in and make a "Mayor's Choice Award" of their favorite quilt or item. We would like to give the owner something!! If not a Ribbon - I guess we can make up just a certificate..... we might even have one of our Congressmen from the area coming in - so I want to plan on that as well. 3 total.... I do have the ability to digitize and embrodier.... this kind of fell through the cracks - thinking somebody else was taking care of it, anyhow, late notice I know..... but do any of you really wize and artistic people have any ideas for me?!? Help! I know that my ribbons all have the gold foil-like writting on the tails..... can I do this and make it look alright?
Judi
Oh - we also have a show pin with a nice star that is the medallion of our raffle quilt. This could be put into the top circle part..... maybe make star points around the circle instead of a ripple of ribbon.... I guess I am just really concered with how and what to do for the bottom hangy part... or can I just make a circle with the star points? (kind of like prairie points - but point-ier....) I would like it to say something somehow....
Pam H
Hi Judi I've made these several times. They are very easy. If I want a wide ribbon I use that satin binding in a package that is used for baby blankets and just iron it open (I also use it for sashes when the girls run for queen at the county fair, I embroider them too) but you can use a grosgrain ribbon too. For the circle you can use a stiff card board and cover it and gather ribbion to make a ruffle and hot glue on the back, sometimes I use those round button makeing thing (don't know what they are called), but you cover the round metal button with fabric, gather to the back and put the back on. You can add your star using either method. First time I made one it was scary not knowing what I was doing, but it really is easy. Pam H
Pam H
I forgot to mention that you might have to use something like fray check or a small zig zag on the bottom of the ribbon if it is the kind that frays. Pam H
Judi
Pam - thanks for the reply! I didn't even think of the satin binding stuff! Great idea - I am guessing I can find that at JoAnns / Hancocks or Hobby Lobby. I need to go to town tomorrow so I will look for it. So - you are actually able to do emboridery on this type of fabric? You don't get puckers? Do I need to use my heavy stabiliazer? And / Or the stuff you put on top of the fabric? I will put in a new needle for sure..... and other hints? Thanks again for this product idea!!
Pam H
I use tearway and sticky spray. Some times I get puckering but on the sashes the wording is about 18 inches long so it does pucker a little. But I iron the heck out of it and after the girls wear it for a week you really can't tell. I've made some for the baby contest too, they look like first place quilt ribbons and just pin on. You could probably use any kind of ribbon that had a little body, you don't want it too floppy. I just hot glue it all together or you could probably use fabric gule too. Good luck. If you have trouble just let me know. Pam H
Judi
Thanks again Pam - I have not found my hot glue gun yet, found the sticks! I do have fabric glue!! I might take you up on that offer. if I run into trouble I will email you!!
Pam H
Judi just make sure the glue is strong enough to hold. Pam H
Judi
I went to town today and found the perfect satin fabric that matches our other colors..... planned ahead and just got 2 yards right away. I can use this for the hanging down parts - with the emobridery on - and then I can sew and use the same backing fabrics we used on our shows raffle quilt! This WILL work! I will at it tomorrow..... will keep you posted.
Judi
Here is a photo of the ribbons I made, I think they turned out really well! Everybody was very happy with them! The congressman was a "NO show" go figure! So we will be giving that out at our next quilt guild meeting to the winner of "veiwer's choice" after all of the ballots are counted. The show was great!! Still need to get the counts and $$ totals - hope we had more people - just not sure - we did get a bus though! That was fun!!
Judi
here is a close-up.... my husband thinks this would be a good side job - like I don't have enough things to do!!
Judi
Pam - thanks for all of your help and ideas!! I am very happy with how they turned out. The only problem I had was in the begining..... when I needed to press the satin (which I just do NOT work with often!) I plugged in my iron - cranked it up high and made sure it had water.... like I do with cotton fabric..... oh my!! Did I melt a stinky mess!!! Oh Live and learn! Dare2pt
These are really cute and they did turn out nice, are you going to provide us the pattern so we can volunteer to help make them other years if needed. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing
sewingupastorm
Judi I love your ribbons! They are terrific. Yep I would like to know the details as well of how you made them!
Georgene
Wow, I would try real hard to win one of those ribbons, they are beautiful. And your husband may be right about a possible side job. Not everyone would go through the learning process as diligently as you did. Great work.
Judi
I did keep track of what I did and my measurements and such.... the main problem I see with how I made these and what I used to make them is this: In the circle center - where the show pin is - I used a round metal cover that comes inside of a package of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls!!! I have saved a bunch, washing them of course!, knowing that they are such nice size and could be used for something!! Now of course my husband says I will have to find something else - that we just couldn't (and shouldn't!!) eat all of those yummy rolls.... bummer..... I thought we could have them for supper too! I think these would be a great base for a wrist pin cushion too in my spare time again..... I would like to make some of those...... Hey - theres and idea! Make a ribbon - that doubles as a pin cusion later - or also give them a pin cushion that matches the ribbon...... hhmmmm.....
Pam H
Judi glad I could help. (I'm usually just a lurker) They turned out beautifully. I loved the ribbon you chose. They aren't hard just a little time comsuming. I will be making more in Sept., if I was smart I would start now, but I'm better at the last minute. I'm off to Paducah tomorrow and Thursday, I just live an hour and half so I don't have the expense of a room, more to buy that way. Pam H

Judi
Julie - thanks for posting those photos! What a great idea too - love the folded flower block! I just really think these type of ribbons are so much nicer and more fitting than the regular factory-made quick-cut and staple ribbon that is fraying on the ends..... these actually look like QUILT ribbons! My hand writing isn't that nice and neat - so I better stick with the emboridery though - so that others can read it too!!
dancingstitcher
Great job with the ribbons Judi. They look very professional. The prairie points are really cute. Think I'll save those cinnamon roll metal ends. You know those fiberglas ironing mats that come with the 007 bonding crystals? Try pressing on high heat with one of those. They work well with metallic threads too as they do not melt the thread. Thanks Julie for the picture of the folded flower ribbon. I had just learned to make those last month and through you I learn another way to use them. Vicki
