yikes FLANGES on a quilt

I love you quilting.  Ok, I thought I knew everything, (not really)  but what are "flanges on a quilt"?  I know what flanges are on a pipe.

A flange is just a piece of fabric folded in half wrong sides together and that is sandwiched between two pieces of fabric.  When the seam is opened the flange is exposed.  It leaves one end not stitched down.  It can really cause issues with puckering and your hopping foot loves to catch on it.
