Sue E. got a reaction from dbams in Inteliquilter (iQ)vs Quilt Path 5
I have had both - currently have an IQ on an older Millie (2008). I don't have any knowledge about the updated QuiltPath but I found the one I had very difficult to use for custom quilting. I also found it quite slow to do anything. One example would be that even when I set it for the fastest sewing speed, it was extremely slow.  Also, we were told to set the design up and send it to the system to sew. It would take forever to be ready to sew. We were told to go get a cup of coffee while we waited. This was unacceptable. I am hoping the system is more powerful now and can process faster. There is absolutely no wait time with the IQ. Also, I found the QP extremely difficult for me because the way you did things was not the way I think. IQ thinks like I do. Test both systems thoroughly - centering a quilting pattern inside a hexagon, a circle, a block, etc. Don't take it for granted that everything will be centered properly! How easy is it to split a design to fit your quilting area or change the design slightly? How easy is it to tweak your design to follow an area that might not be 100% perfect? It is quite easy with the IQ, it wasn't on the QuiltPath I had. Good luck with whatever your choice is but I do recommend quite strongly that you test both systems in operation to be sure you get what will work best for you. My mistake with purchasing the QP when it first came out was a very costly mistake for me.

Sue E. got a reaction from momof2 in Robotics for 2008 Millie
I have a 2008 Millie with IntelliQuilter. I love it. The 2 work very nicely together. Originally I had a CompuQuilter and love those together but when the company started having problems I switched to a QuiltPath (pretty soon after it came out) and I hated that system. I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I went with IntelliQuilter and have had it now for about 7 or so years. It can handle anything I throw at it from simple edge-to-edge, pantos, to custom. IQ has a great program that is being upgraded all the time and customer service is the best. Check it out.

This makes me very sad as I own a 2008 Millie. I am the original owner and they did not have the lifetime warranties back then. I sure hope they can correct this situation because I can't afford to purchase a new longarm. I love my Millie and don't want to lose it!

Hot Mess is right! Why is it so hard to set boundaries when we are inately generous? Eighty is not that old if she's active enough to sew a top every month! Explain to her that the pet hair has become a problem---that the hair/dander transfers to your leaders/clothes/area and while you aren't allergic, you may have others you quilt for who are. If she can't clean them up to remove the hair and the smell (yuck!) (or have a friend do that for her) you gently and reluctantly tell her you will need to stop quilting for her. This is absolutely appropriate and I guess I'm not kind enough to continue doing something that makes me miserable every month when she has some control over the issues.  Bless her, of course, for still having the passion for piecing. But your time and talent are your own to manage and you should not have to do so many extra tasks to make her quilt presentable when she doesn't recognize the issues and has no incentive to help. Does she have a close friend that you can bring into the mix---who can be the go-between for suggestions and boundaries? Sorry if this seems harsh, but I'm also "old" and would like to spend my longarming time stitching and not fixing someone elses careless piecing and smelly, hairy tops.

I am not sure. I do know that before I purchased my IQ (I started with the CQ in 2005) people who were trying to update/upgrade their CPUs and still have CQ run were having many problems. Many of the CQ drivers etc. are too old to be handled by the newer/faster computers. I would highly recommend contacting Zoltan Kasa at IntelliQuilter as he is now the person supporting CQs. He has helped many of us.

Sue E. got a reaction from dbams in broken needle made a hole in the fabric!
@Jane KamanWhen the needle has done this to me, I have found the easiest and best way to stop it is to just turn the entire head off (I have a Milliie). I had something like this happen to me last week when I hadn't moved my head with my IQ to the proper place and then told it to stitch. I tried to stop it before it took too many stitches but in my panic, I hit the stop/pause button too many times and the IQ didn't know what to do. Luckily I was off to the side and the only fabric that got damaged was the extra backing material and not the quilt. I reached up and turned my Millie off. The IQ was left on so I didn't lose my design or any settings.

I've had my Millie since 2005 and I've never seen a stitch count. I believe that APQS machines don't track stitches. If I am wrong, I hope someone corrects me and tells me how to find the count. I've never seen anything or heard anything about a stitch count on an APQS machine.

Have you checked the fuse? I had to change the fuse on my when it stopped working. I know the box says not to open, but my husband works with electricity and electronics all the time and he fixed it. It was quite easy. Good luck!

Once in a while a quilt comes along that is just special. "I Woolly Love Ewe" was one of those, I love the design and the title, and I was thrilled when Wendy asked me to custom quilt it for her. Isn't the black sheep super cute? I am really happy with the way it turned out, and it looks even better now that it is bound and washed. I love the picture Wendy sent me of the finished quilt, the little girl seems to agree with me on the black sheep (I have permission to share this picture online.)

Lora, great topic which needs to be brought up every now and then.  I like hearing what's happening in other parts of the country and world.  I have Millie with an IQ.  I did not raise  my prices when I got my computer.  I didn't need to because I could do more quilts which evened the field.  I charge a penny and a half for loose pantos/e2e and 2 pennies for tight pantos/e2e.  I have a Quilt finishing shop a block away from me (I'm also in a small town) who charges about the same.  The owner and I have a great relationship because she just does pantos/e2e.  She also sells batting, wide backs and flannel.  She does no custom, so she sends those customers to me or another longarmer.  There's work for everyone.  You really have to flow with the local pricing or you will loose those "bread and butter" customers.  When I moved to Michigan, I asked around about longarm pricing before I decided on what to charge.  I ask my customers  to pick out the panto they want from the hundreds I have  but  if a customer wants a particular panto design that I don't have (i.e. hippos, fire hose, particular flowers),  I charge them a one time special design charge of $15.00,  plus my normal square inch charge.  It will help you build your design catalog fast  without coming directly from your pocket.  I do the same with my embroidery business.
Great info, advise and thoughts everyone.

Sue E. got a reaction from Mary Beth in Win A Millie September '17 version
Oh Mary Beth, I can so relate to this. I was tutored almost every night in my junior year in high school to get me through my algebra course - that was the last course in math I had to have! When I was in college and took an accounting course, I barely passed my final exam because not one of my columns on the 10 column worksheet balanced. All my numbers were in the proper spot but I couldn't add up all the numbers - remember this was long before adding machines/calculators were allowed in the classroom. I didn't have enough time (or fingers) to do the math.
About 15-20 years ago my husband's office was looking for someone to do some accounting work and my sister-in-law asked if I wanted to work part-time for them. I asked my husband what he told her - he said that by the time he stopped laughing, she had left for the day! I was never asked to work for them. I can do simple math, but don't ask me anything complicated. Thank goodness for calculators!
Actually, quilting has helped me slightly with my math skills. You do need to be able to do some simple math to figure out some patterns.

I am so happy there are math lovers out there, that is what makes the world go around. I will tell you a secret, wine tastes worse than Nyquil. I am not like other people. I can follow directions on a pattern. I can cut out patterns. I can piece. I can even come up with my own patterns. However, I tried to take math in college and had to hire a tutor. One night after a "groundhog" type day with my tutor, where she would help me through a problem...I seem to get it...then the next problem looked totally foreign. She looked at me and asked, "Who did this to you?" When I say I cannot do math.....please believe me....I cannot do math. I can cook, measure, even double a recipe. But don't give me anything harder than addition and subtraction.

Sue E. got a reaction from jgardog in Which threads do you have a love/hate relationship with?
My "go to" thread right now is Omni. I love it. I have no problems with tension and I like how it looks. It is thicker than So Fine but I have the best luck with it. I also have no problems running Maxi-Lock Swirls. In the past I have had problems with Highlights and Rainbow. I have several cones of King Tut and had no problem with it, but I don't seem to use it very often. I usually run pre-wound bobbins. I was given lots of them by someone who didn't like them and I am still using them up. I also have some BOBs I use. I have used Glide thread only a couple of times and had no problems but the Glide bobbins I bought have thread that is too thick (I'm not in the sewing area so I don't remember which one it is) and I don't like them at all. I need to buy some other Glide bobbins and see how they look and act.
