Isn't it wonderful how people on the list are so willing to share not only their expertise but their time and friendship to help other quilters.   I consider myself still a newbie to long arm quilting and I can't tell you how much I have learned from others on this list - many amazing, talented people.  I am so thankful for this list and everyone on it.

Mercedes got a reaction from Oma in Fabric Swap after the first of the year (update guidelines)
I remember now, I've done one of these before years ago.  We put all the fabric in a padded envelop and included another envelop with the postage already on it  so whoever was separating the fabric and mailing only had to put them in the envelop, seal it and mail it off.  You can determine postage by how much it costs to send the fabric - just put that much and maybe a little more in case other fabrics weight a little more.

This makes it much easier for the person accepting all of these fabrics.   Just a thought.

It looks like the last day to enter for the APQS long arm giveaway is the 15th.  If I can't win this, I sure hope someone on the list does!   Good luck to you all.

Mercedes got a reaction from Oma in Lucky Me (not quilt related)
I found a beautiful Antique Ribbon Cabinet on Craigslist today and went to see it.  It was absolutely beautiful and came home with me.   It's glass on all four sides with doors front and back that fold down to put the rolls of ribbon in.  Each side panel has a pull out glass drawer that pulls out from either side.  I've never seen one before and just had to have it.  The price was super right which made it my best buy of the year.

I know this isn't quilt related but had to tell someone.  Hopefully I can fit it in my sewing room and either fill with rolls of ribbons or some other wonderful sewing related items that will do it justice.   If you've ever seen one of these you know how cool they look.   If anyone has one, I'd be interested to know what they displayed in it.

Marjorie,  If you didn't get a manual with your Millie, do contact APQS about getting one.  I put tabs on mine and can flip to those items I use all the time.  It's very handy to have.

A car cover works wonderfully to cover the full frame and your Millie.  I use one on mine all the time to keep dust off her.

I finally found it - right on the top of the machine where the curve starts.  Seems like I looked in all the hard places first - LOL

Mercedes got a reaction from delores62305 in Quilt Glide - how often do you use
Here's what it says about Quilt Glide on the APQS site:

Quilt easier with the APQS Quilt Glide Stitch Mode feature. Quilt Glide combines manual sewing mode and stitch regulation mode to give you accuracy and consistency without that "jerky" feeling that is common when trying to do detail quilting in regulator mode alone.
When engaged, the Quilt Glide keeps the needle moving up and down in stitch regulation mode, even when you stop moving the quilting machine. Since the needle continues to stitch when the Quilt Glide is on, you'll feel like you're gliding through your design like smooth pen strokes.

Thank you for the great tips.  After thinking this through I probably wouldn't have the new leaders from the new machine when I sell my old machine - that's a bummer.  Don't have room for two machines at one time.

I agree that not having leaders could ruin a sale so I'm just going to have to purchase leaders for my old machine and put them on so I can keep mine with the zippers.   Guess this is only a minor expense compared to the purchase of the new machine.   This is such a great forum to work thru issues - thanks everyone!

You may want to make a quick sample of how two colored threads will look - especially on the back of the quilt.  It doesn't have to be large just enough to give her a visual on how that will look.  Sometimes seeing an actual sample is more convincing then trying to tell someone.

Mercedes got a reaction from rdp in Help Needle up/down not working.
I had a similar problem with my Mille after she had sat for a long time.  After taking off the side cover I followed the directions in my APQS Maintenance Manual:

Grasp the rockery assembly with your thumb and forefinger and twist it counterclockwise (left).  The small coil spring should compress and an air gap should open up between the rubber grommet and the sliding sleeve on the rocker assembly.  This sleeve should slide up and down smoothly on the vertical shaft when the rocker assembly is twisted.  The spot should be oiled occasionally especially in a damp environment.  If this spot becomes rusted, the hopping foot mechanism will not operate correctly resulting in poor stitch quality and broken needles.  If this movement is stiff or stickily, spray with WD40 first before applying oil.

I'm not exactly sure why this fixed my issue but after doing this and warming Millie up with the command buttons, she did the up and down without any issues.  There are pictures in the manual of how to do this.  I did not have to adjust the needle up/down after doing this.

APQS has great customer service whether you purchased the machine from them or bought it used from someone else.  Just give them a call and their service department will help you figure out what's wrong.  I purchased my machine used and I've had only the best experiences with APQS so do call them.

Thanks so much.  I need to change my needle and didn't want to use something that wasn't approved or would cause me problems with my machine.  I've loaded up a huge piece of fabric and am going to practice all day today.  This will be practicing freehand quilt designs, ruler work and altering my tension and then back to the best stitch I can get.  I'll also be using my saddle stool to try and get used to using it more.  I consider myself a beginner so there will be no pressure here - just fun, fun fun!

Mercedes got a reaction from Oma in Quilting with granddaughters
I have started sewing sessions with my three grand daughters and I have to say it has been a wonderful experience.  They are so excited about everything.  We went over safety procedures for the sewing machines and iron and then started their first project which was pillowcases.  They have never sewn before.  They got to go to the quilt store and pick our their own fabrics which took a long time.  It was so interesting to see them go through the whole store before they settled on material.  We had two sessions and all three finished their pillow cases yesterday.

I setup three featherweight tables and machines next to my long arm and each of them learned how to thread their featherweight machines and rewind and change bobbins and most importantly keep the fingers away from the needle.  I took pictures during the whole process and purchased a 4 x 6 plastic container for their pictures.  Each time they come to sew they have new pictures in their case of things they did during the last session.  They were so excited during the last session that we sewed from 9am until 3pm with a lunch break.  Kids have tons of energy.

Each of them will get to keep their featherweights and tables when we're done with the sessions.   Their next project will be to make a lap size quilt.  It will be a very simple quilt with square blocks sewn together - I have some wonderful colors they can choose from in my stash.   I have the original walking feet for the featherweights so I'm hoping these will work well as I'm planning on having them use these to quilt with - all straight lines of course.  I've never used these attachments before so I'm hoping they work.

I'm wondering what other simple projects you've done with your grand kids that I might be able to do in the future with mine.  Also, I'd love to hear about others experiences with sewing with they're kids or grandkids.  I'm having the best time and never realized how much I would enjoy this!
