One of the many reasons I love APQS, they don't limit the forum to APQS only.  Everyone is welcome, we may tease you about your machine but never anything serious.  Welcome to the forum.

Deb, what great news, let us know when you order Millie (or someone else).

I also have a mid arm, and this forum has helped me tremendously. I have a down payment on a Millie. I went to the quilt show is Syracuse on Friday to try out the Millie again to make sure it's what I want before paying the rest. It looks like I'm going to be contacting them this week to let them know I will be purchasing a Millie.

    Ardelle,
I agree with these ladies, a 'special' is a great way to get some more panto work.
You should NOT feel guilty about making a good living! How much does your plumber, electrician, mechanic charge per hour? Do you make that much per hour from pantos? Shouldn't you? I think you should.
We both know there is no money in custom quilting... this 'raise' will help balance out the loss we take on custom work.
Remember that this is a public forum and your clients have access to it. Telling the world your quilting time has been cut in half is probably not the best thing to do.
As far as lowering your prices... It would be terrible for the industry as a whole. We are all fighting to make a living wage at quilting. I researched your local market and found the following prices. What do you charge for pantos?
Pantographs are from $.035 - $.045 per square inch.
    Pantos range from $0.0275 - $0.035/sq"
    found another... Pantos from .0225 - .03/sq"

Thanks everyone for looking - it means a lot coming from such an amazing group of talented quilters! I have to thank Matt Sparrow and Sparrow Studioz for bringing such great instructors to Alberta - I have learned so much from quilters like Judi Madsen and Claudia Pfiel - two of my favourites!

Matt Sparrow reacted to Betty Henry in Sparrow Studio Spa treatments in Southern Ontario
Sparrow Studios, will be in the area of Southern Ontario for Creative Festival in Toronto and they are willing to do full service spa treatment on APQS machines on October 24, 25, & 26 at a central location.  It would mean that you would bring your machine head to the service location (still to be determined - one option is at the home garage of Peggy Nagle in Elora).  The Spa treatment covers anything that could go wrong with the machine.  The price would be around $200 CDN per head.  Depending on how many machines there would be for servicing, the price could be less.  If you absolutely must have service in your home the price will be more than the above price plus mileage.  If you are interested, please email Peggy Nagle at peggy.nagle@gmail.com or Matt Sparrow at Sparrow Studios. Matt Sparrow reacted to zen quilter in Need Longarm Lessons: Run, don't walk to Carol Cunningham
My husband and I are so excited about the quilting experience we just had, I have to share it.  Having purchased a APQS Millenium in January 2014 I was stressed.  You know the questions.  Can I do this?  Is my quilting now at a level that I could charge?  How do other quilters do that?  Will I ever make money to pay for my Millie?  I finally got smart and found Carol Cunningham who is a APQS dealer and educator.  I booked us in for four decadent days of quilting bliss with Carol at her beautiful studio "The Quilt Batt" in Beamsville, Ontario.  Carol sorted us out.  Thread, tension, batting, design ideas, stencils, pattern transfers, use of rulers, marking tops, machine maintenance, freehand drawing, freehand quilting, stippling, applique, feathers, business ideas and issues, so many techniques, and so much more.  Carol will take you from knowing nothing, to feeling comfortable and confident with your machine and your skills.  Time just flies with Carol.  We arrived for 9:30 am and before you know it, it is lunch.  Carol (now known to me as superwoman) has prepared a delicious lunch for us.  Chicken pot pie, beautiful green salads, fresh baked breads, fresh fruit, and crème brule ice cream.  You get the idea.  Carol is so knowledgeable and so much fun before you know it, it's 4:30 and you are done for the day.  Learning from Carol was not at all like the business trip I was expecting.  It turned out to be a fabulous vacation, a real getaway for the two of us.  We asked for ideas on what to do as we don't know the area.  Carol did not disappoint with her suggestions.  There is a really great outlet mall, Niagara On The Lake, and Niagara Falls.  If you are thinking of buying a machine or if you are in need of lessons Carol is the one to contact.  Thank you Carol Cunningham and thank you APQS for having the fine dealers and educators you do.

On a side note I feel the need to tell you about a device Carol showed me called "The Circle Thingy" by Circlelord and I am in love.  Check it out.  It is amazing and can be easier than turning on your computer to make perfect circles every time.

Yes, isn't it funny that one of the easiest things to do on a domestic machine is one of the most difficult things on a longarm.
I have finally gotten rather comfortable with SID, and it sure makes the quilts look better and helps keep them square. It's my way of getting to know the quilt. After I've done the SID on a custom quilt, I have a much better idea of what I'm dealing with and also some ideas (sometimes) of how to quilt it.
Keep practicing, you'll get good at it eventually.

    Hello fellow quilters
I have learned something this week.  I now know why we charge more for stitch in the ditch, it is a pain in the ditch.  You should also not do it unless you are absolutely sure that your quilter has all their seams lined up correctly or you are going to point out their errors (of course it that is what they request you have not choice).  You should never agree to do this on the quilt of your mother in law's Aunt Nell when you have never done it on one of your own quilts for practice yet,
and I am sure there are many other things the more experienced quilters can tell me that I have yet to learn.

In fact, they're preparing for a big open house beginning on Wednesday beginning at 9:30 (with lots of door prizes, and some great deals on APQS machines at the Road Show on Thursday). I sent them a note to let Tony, Myrna and Marilyn know you might pop in tomorrow for a test drive.

I know the recommendation is to press the seam open, but I prefer to press to one side.  More stable, in my opinion.

Matt Sparrow reacted to dlnewell in Taking a poll - Seam open or to one side?
I guess I'm in the minority, but I press to one side.  I allways cut off the selvage first though. My reasoning for pressing to one side is the same for piecing on the top.  If the stitching breaks and comes undone, you won't have a visible hole.
