  1. Is there a tutorial on how to replace the check spring? I'm not sure my manual has anything on this feature.

  4. Definitely use the fuse knit type of interfacing. Joanns is a good source. Do not use the non-woven pellon products as they shrink and pull away from the fabric over time. I know we've all seen this happen in poorly made garments that use it. Non-woven pellon or interfacing should only be used in craft projects not garment construction.

  6. I just went to a Harriet Hargrave lecture and she stated that Hobbs has lost it's quality as well. I have used it and loved the loft but it has changed. I went to a local store to purchase some of the batting and there were two rolls. One was soft and light the other with that rough pot scrub roughness as Judy described it. I feel that once the batting is presoaked it softens a bit and does give more loft, but it still isn't nearly as nice as it used to be. I have found bats with little black grease like dots in the batts. Disconcerting to say the least. If the company isn't going to improve
  7. Is it possilbe that the bobbin is in the bobbin case going in the wrong direction? I was having a lot of trouble with my tension till I started running my bobbin tension looser than I had been. I do the drop test differently, I set the bobbin case on the table and lift the thread. If the bobbin case stands up on end but doesn't come off the table then that's just about perfect tension for me. Also I bought the TOWA and run that at about 15. The other big thing is the spring on the upper tension. If that is too tight or too loose I've had intermittent tension problems especially in tight l
  8. Jane Ann, you can just let it sit and collect dust if you don't get in there and use it. The CL is very easy to set up and use, we just need to do that. Once you've done the clam or the baptist fan though you'll be very happy you did. I can get a beautiful custom look on a quilt with the clam and it works wonderfully with those customers who want a vintage pattern for antique or antique replica quilts.   9. By twisting the seam, do you mean to sort of tighten it in that center area where the seam is building up to try to aven it out to the sides? I know that I straighten the seam when it is running with the bars when necessary. I have read about the zig zag seam so that the seam can give a bit. I'd forgotten about that.   10. Now that we're on this subject, I wanted to know if any of you have had trouble stitching the last curve of the fan from left to right, the little inside one. We know the LA machine doesn't like this angle and I've had some problems with my tensions changing on this last curve of the BF template. Michael suggested flipping the template over to change this angle and I haven't tried this yet. Wanted to see if anyone else has noticed a railroading on that last curve and if so what you did to help it. I've been wondering if the titanium needles would help since they don't deflect as much? J
  11. Oh do share the links with us GiftedHands. I kow I have a couple that I have enjoyed very much, Linda Taylor has a very good one and there's another one out there who's title and author escapes me at the moment. Both with great information and pictures.
  12. I used to have this same problem with one of my favortie pantos that had lots of points. I have since started using my TOWA tension guage and can keep my bobin tension exact for each top thread I use. I run about 20, but others I know run a higher bobbin tension on their TOWA it' depends on your machine. When I found the perfect tension for the bobbin I was able to reduce the tension on top to match and this stopped the pulling at the points on the top thread. Now I can drop the top tension half a turn to reduce the pulling at the points on top and still not have any railroads on my bottom
  13. Hang in there. You're stitch will become nice and even with practice. I have a very nice stitch now and I've been doign this for just a year. Yikes, its' been a year already!. I found that doing panto's really helped me to do an even stitch in the beginning because I could just get into the rhythm of the pattern. When I'm doing freemotion on the front it helps me to have some evenly paced music playing to keep my enthusiasm as even as I want my stitches . This is a great little :)machine.   14. Darlene is right, I've never been afraid of wavey borders since we had the experience in her class with this quilt. And the finished quilt ended up looking square! Darlene, I still cannot believe that we managed that quilt. I often think about it when I'm having a particularly 'wavy' day.
  15. We've been known to do the soap treatment with smelly sewing machine cases too. I have used Irish Spring with good results. I usually put it inside a cloth bag. If it was going to actually sit on a quilt I'd want to make sure that nothing could permeate through the cloth onto the quilt. Just in case there's something in the soap that could discolor or damage the fabric of the quilt top.
