Quilting Heidi
Good to see you made it home Sandra! Thanks again for the fabric and pencil. My daughter really liked the feel of the fabric and that is half the battle. I was able to fit all my fabric in my extra bag and was really glad I didn't have to fashion a dress with 16 yards of 120" wide fabric but I was prepared to if I had to. I hope you remembered to take the check out of the pocket of your pants!
lizziesgirl
Shana, Great job. Love, love, love your feathers. I haven't had the courage to try them the bump bump way, but looking at yours I might have to give it a try. After Christmas of course.
PattyJo
My Dear Friend Shana - You are an amazing woman - hear you roar!! LOL Those feathers are WONDERFUL. Way to go - You have them down girl. On the next quilt that you are going to do, I would do something different. That way if the piecers of the quilts compare their quilts, they will see two different quilts and not trying to copy them as they do at Sears, Macy's etc..... And you know how much you paid for that advice don't ya!! so it isn't worth very much. Hope to meet you live and in person one day when you come down to see Donna.
roberta
Shana - I have to agree with everyone. Your feathers are beautiful and I really really appreciate all the information you provided on how you did them. All this time I thought they were just done freehand and I just have not been able to do that very well, even on paper. So now I must buy some stencils and some books, ha ha... Rika is simply just adorable. What a cute fuzzy face. I love her expression, it is good to have such an adorable quilt protector
Just Sew Simple
Shana, can I come spend a month or so with you? First I'd like to see snow in person and not just on a picture and 2nd I could be your understudy! Doesn't that sound like fun? Just kidding but I sure wish you lived closer! I marked the curved spine with a ruler, but even when I quilted the spine It was done freehand. No stencils used here. But, I would like to get some stencils as I only have a couple and have not used them yet. Sherry Rogers Harrison's book: Formal Feathers 101 really helped me to PPP these freehand feathers. Also Karen McTavish's Elemental Quilting book helped me to PPP.
roberta
Shana - thanks for the clarification. I can see I really need to buy the books, ha ha.. I still really appreciate your discription of how you quilted the actual feather. I had been trying to move up the spine on both sides at the same time. You know feather to the right then the left and then move up. It hasn't been pretty. I am very impressed at how beautiful your feathers are, you are very talented. quiltmonkey
Oh please, stop...really, it's not talent. I just practiced. you can do this too Roberta. Just PPP. Get the books. They are very helpful. Also, I do one side all the way to the top, then stop and do the other side. I don't swap back forth going up. Oh and wanted to mention that Darlene Epp's books on formal feathers are good, too!
sammi357
whew! every time I see quilts/quilting on here, I think I should give up and sell my machine! that's gorgeous. love that puppy face ! What a model!
Merryjo2003
Shana, love the feathers! You certainly mastered them! The quilt is really cute. The feathers make it in my opinion. I love feathers and sometimes I just can't think of anything else to do but feathers! I kinda get stuck there. Like you, I also have a photo mascot. Usually the cat, only because he is inside when it's late and I'm finally taking pics. The dogs are usually already in bed by then. Casino looks like a black wolf. He might make a customer cringe if I forwarded them a pic of their quilt! Just Sew Simple
Y, yes Mam, you can come to see me in MS. You need to plan your trip for the summer when it is really hot and you can see the "real" south. We have a large swimming pool we enjoy during the summer months where we not only just hang out, we play many games! If you like Mai Tais (any drink with an umbrella) and such, you would fit right in!! And another thing, we are only a short distance from New Orleans! We'll have to plan a swap! Bonnie B, do you want to come too?
Bonnie
Would love to, but with a teen still in the house...road trips are sometimes hard to do.....

chickenscratch
Oh I wish I could do feathers like you do. Those are gorgeous. As far as doing the other one, if it's for a different customer I would show her what you did on this one and ask her if she likes it. If it's for the same customer I would do them differently. Suezquilts
how can I add to this, but your quilting has come along way in a year! Great job and it was nice to be able to understand how you did that. has anyone tried taking electrical wire and bending that to make a spine? We built a new kitchen and all this scrap wire was laying there, and you know what we do when we have scraps we save them. I took some and would bend the spine of half the quilt, trace on with dressmakers wax (which irons off) this way I get it pretty much even and balanced through the quilt. Robin
Shana, Your quilting is gorgeous! I hope someday I can break away from my panto comfort zone and get to doing custom. My biggest problem is deciding what to quilt in custom quilting. I am comfortable from the front of the machine, but my bread and butter is panto. Panto is less decisions and just easier on my brain. I have a little quilt to do for guild and it has different blocks, some applique, some just plain blocks, and some blocks with a border around them. I'm stumped as far as what to do on it as the blocks are so random. I have to get over my indecision problem and start doing custom. Some quilts, like the one you did, scream custom. I hope I can quilt like you do when I grow up! Robin
quiltmonkey
You all can do this. Really. Just PPP and don't be afraid to just try. Go for it. Draw some squares and triangles on muslin and draw a spine and practice with thread. Also keep in mind that same color thread is your friend and helps to blend into the background so you have texture. Same color threads helps hide backtracking. I took a Twirly Whirly Feathers class from Kimmy Brunner this past May at MQS that really helped me (a giant light bulb moment for me) with my bump/over top feather technique. Here's Kim's brand spankin' new web site. Check her out and read her blog. She's a hoot. Such a genuine and kind person. I am grateful for people like Kim Brunner to help wannabees like me. (thanks Kimmy for being you!!) Oh, and I have her beginner DVD which is awesome. http://www.kimmyquilt.com/

ramona-quilter
Shana, those are some awesome feathers, girlfriend. Wow, your backtracking is perfection. Way to go. I love the side light photo. You should frame that one and hang it in you studio. I mean it, it looks like art, Shana.
