Suggestions for New Zealand quilt please

Recommended Posts

I donated quilting for a "baby quilt" at a quilt camp and this is what the winner gave me. I was expecting to freehand or panto a sweet little quilt. Obviously, I can't do that here, especially with the cross stitch, circles and WOVEN section in the left middle. They are black strips and grassy strips woven into a square. You can stick your fingers through them. I'm at a loss how to do this and have it look really nice. Next time, I'll be a bit more specific with my donations.

This is exquisitely pieced and the fabrics are scrumptious. It deserves something beautiful

WOW....and at this point I hate to say it, but I'm glad I'm not you at this moment in time.

The woven sections will have to be fixed somehow so that you can't get your fingers down through it.....maybe my first thought would be to use a iron on stabilizer...(I think I said that same thing in another post today)...at least the baby won't beable to get his/her finger down into the quilt and pick at the battings..

The woven sections I would cross hatch using the natural points of the squares to go by, and then eash section in my opinion (and as Patty Jo's states, ya paid a whole lot for that suggestion) is going to be different, not necessarily a different thread change, but a different design. As you posted you aren't going to be able to do a panto or edge to edge background...way to busy for that. And them maybe an echo in the cross-stitched areas...so you don't need to go across the threads....and of course a BUNCH of SID....

Good luck, this quilt is pretty, but wow, I'm not sure where I would start except with the cross hatchin part and then go out from that as the quilt talks to you.

That is a very pretty top! Perhaps you can gently inform your customer that "baby quilt" pertains to a style, not a size. Let her know that this top cries for a more intense treatment than a cute overall design that would be used on a baby quilt. Would she like to save your donation for another time, or is she happy with the offered overall design??

As far as how to quilt this?--First, give it back and have her apply a light non-woven fusible just to the back of that woven block. (What was she thinking!?) That will stabilize it and allow you to stitch over it. Still, there will be loose edges on the block, but you won't catch and tear it as easily. You could still do an overall--maybe a big McT-style curvey design using BL or SewFine in black. The cross stitched blocks may need a different treatment. Above all, be very specific with your next donation!!:D:D:D

(This advice is coming from someone who spent way too many hours stitching on a customer top cuz I was "bored" with the old standby fillers!!)

I was delighted to see this top--a friend from work is from New Zealand and brought this exact fabric line back as a gift four years ago. The fabrics and animals are all New Zealand natives and the line is beautiful. I made a shirt out of mine.

Have fun and please share a photo when you finish working your magic on this one.:)

This may sound really simple, even too simple, but I did an oriental quilt once with a design by Kim Diamond, Sashiko block, and the customer was very happy. I made the giant clamshell about six inches across and three inches high, with the little "grass" in the middle. The turquoise thread worked well. It was great on the back too.
