I did not put on my base extender and didn't have a problem at all. I guess because I hold it in my left hand either to the left or in front, and the area above the thread cutter is plenty wide enough to support the tool. Just my experience, though. I have a base expander (& don't want to sell it, 'cause I'm afraid I will regret it someday like you, Nora), but in fact I don't really like the extender & rarely use it.
