DebLou
My mom and I are piecing a stack and slash quilt made from various colors and my Dad's chambry workshirts. We wanted to do something special with his shirts. In each corner of the border we have put a shirt pocket and I will stitch a dump truck in one, a pickup, old tractor and a newer tractor in each of the others. In the border I'm putting a tractor, corn stalks, barn, house and trees that look very similar to the ones we had. (I hope) In the middle of the quilt I'm not sure what design to make. Is it better to keep the lines straight since there are no curves, or is it better to do curves? The two designs I've thought about are shattered glass or Baptist fan. I thought maybe the Baptist fan may look like a plowed field. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or any other ideas. I'm sure you've guessed by now that my dad was a farmer. Quilting Heidi
I agree it needs some curves and BF is probably a great choice!
LeeAnn
Oh, yes, the Baptist Fans will look either like plowed fields or planted rows. Very cool!

DebLou
Thanks for your quick responses. I was unsure of what the rule of thumb was for straight line piecing opposed to other patterns. Also, if really curvy is it better to keep with the curves or the opposite? Thanks for looking. Quilting Heidi
Mary Lou, As a general rule for me if it has lots of straight lines I usually add curves to give it movement. There are times where this doesn't necessarily apply but most of the time it works. If it is really curvy I usually add in some straight lines to balance it. witha'K'quilting
I also agree...Baptist Fans are a great choice. Please post pics when you are finished. This sounds like it is going to be a very special quilt when you are all done with it.

TerriVB
Love your idea--my mom isn't ready to cut up my Dad's clothing yet--I keep waiting for her to ask for help. Anyway--here is one I did for a customer that wanted her quilt to look like the fields of Iowa from an airplane. I did this all freehand--some random baptist fans and wavy parallel lines to look like furrows in the fields.
TerriVB
now a view from the front...have fun with whatever you decide.
DebLou
Terri How cool is that!! I would love to see the whole back better. Did you just do some plowed rows randomly or did you section it off? Thanks for sharing.
TerriVB
Mary Lou-- This is the only other picture of the back that I have--didn't show much more--but I just did the designs real random--whatever I felt that hadn't been done in a while.
