Make sure the batting is placed with the correct side up.

Dawn Cavanaugh says--hold the batting vertically under a light. The dimpled side goes UP (on top of the backer with the top then layered on) and the "slubby" or fuzzy side goes DOWN (against the backer) This assures that the needle-punching that most battings get at the factory run from the top to the back. This will help with bearding.

Also change needles as a burr will push the batting through as well. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Hi Christine

Which batting are you using?

I always use one with a scrim usually Matilda's Own. They even do a charcoal batting which looks great on jewel colour quilts, it seems to bring the brighter colours out well.

Choose a good quality backing fabric too that is not too loosely woven.

Best wishes

Sue
