CindyT
What is your favorite feather spine ruler or way of doing consistent spines? I've borrowed a friend's ruler, but before buying one, I'd like opinion's on your favorites please. Thanks to the most informative group I know.
KathG
HI Cindy I would also like to know which rulers are favourites for feather spines. I would love it if Adam and Linda made a template with a selection of feathers spines. I would order it in a heartbeat:D
witha'K'quilting
I was thinking the same as you Kath. I would love a long template board with different shaped spines. I would buy it in an instant! What do you say Adam and Linda?? Need more prodding? I will send you some ideas.
LinneaMarie
I used to use Constantine's and I still like it, but I really like Gadget Girls big Shells and Swirls one!! I can see through it. On the flip side, the Constantine one has two curves, one on each side, one a little deeper than the other. Here the link for Gadget Girls one: http://www.thegadgetgirls.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=162 I got the other from Kingsmen:http://kmquiltingsupply.com/Parts/NoFrills.asp It's the No Frills Swirls ruler. I usually just chalk the line rather than trying to ride it with the hopping foot. They both work fine.
Joyce
i would like one too, get busy Adam and you will have a bunch of happy quilters.

ffq-lar
If you want to mark spines (not stitch them) I recommend Darlene Zimmerman's Easy Scallop marking set. Two pieces of mylar you can adjust to mark literally any length of border or sashing in up/down curves for spines. To use, take the length of the border and divide the length by an odd number (so the curves can turn the corners). If you have 66 inches to fill with feathers and want 9 curves, the math shows 7.3. Adjust the mylar pie-shape to that number and mark up/down all along the center of the border. The 9 curves will magically appear and then turn each corner nicely. Nancy's Notions sells this item ($13.50) and most shops carry it as well--normally used to mark evenly-spaced scallops for the outside border edge. LeeAnn
Wow Linda, I've never heard of that! I'll have to look that one up. THanks!
CindyT
Kath, Kristina, Joyce...I was thinking the same thing and had already sent Linda and Adam an e-mail when I posted my question to see if their Wavy Template would work as feather spines. So guess we all are on the same wave link in using our Quiltazoid to help with the spines! That's too funny! LinneaMarie and Linda, thank you for your input. Will take a look. GrandmaLKB
How about feather spines on a tracing template that can be used up front - just placing them end to end across the border - maybe a curved one for the corners ??? Feathers is the one design I am most anxious to try when I do buy my QZ ! Maybe Adam and Linda will have some new gadgets designed by then !!! Bonnie
I use one of the Gadget Girls rulers..... Mary Beth
I use the Gadget Girls templates mentioned and I have used one of the lines on my CL Cable Template, it has about 4 lines and I just stitch out one of those for the vein. Also, I have a template from Off the Edge.
Quilting Heidi
I usually use my circle or oval rulers to mark a spine. A lot of times I'll just freehand the spine with chalk and then start stitching.
TerriVB
I use my soft wave and deep curve rulers from Off the Edge rulers--sometimes I just use them to mark and sometimes I stitch the spines. For a special motif--or center starting point I like the Plume that they carry--plus pink is my favorite color!!! http://store.offtheedgequilting.com/ruandgu.html
hollyc
I like Sherry Rodgers apple core ruler, wouldn't work without it.
diane c
I just used my Soft Wave from Off the Edge, along with my 6" circle for the corners. I also use my circles and ovals a lot. I think I'm going to get another oval set at MQS.
Laura Farnham
I'm like Heidi~ Usually just chalk out a spine and go for it. I also use circles cut out of heavy poster board (3 sheets for a dollar at Dollartree:)) Differant color for each size. just lay them out and chalk around them. You can achieve a nice spine for borders in this manner. Laura
anniemueller
I've been using an old CD with chalk to mark the spine. Sharon Schamber teaches with it.
witha'K'quilting
I like the CD idea. I have lots of those freebies you get in the mail!
CindyT
Thank you all for your brilliant and workable ideas. Since I'm not a good freehand feather spine maker, hopefully I'll get to see some of the rulers mentioned at MQS. I can wait until then...I think.
