barbann03
Hi there, I have a question about a quilt. MY MIL has a quilt for me that she tied and she wants me to quilt it for practice! She said she doesn't really care what I do on it, she just wants me to have something to practice on. My question is, if it's already completed, do I have to take it all apart to quilt it on the machine? I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if it has a binding or not. I only know it's tied. I already told her the ties will have to come out. Just wondering how I should handle this! Barb:)
Debberdo
Without seeing it, I would say you should untie it and take the layers apart completely. I've done that with one and it worked out fine. I used a new backing and batting, though. Good luck with that! Deb
MarieBrewer
I did pantos on three quilts that my mom had tied. They turned out fine. She had SID on the outside borders which helped and I cut all the ties then panto'd it. The backing is a little rumpled here and there but I would never take the binding off and start over. chickenscratch
Barb, If it does not already have binding on it, I would take it apart. The only problem you might encounter is that the backing will be cut to the same size as the quilt. If you run into this, baste some strips of muslin around the outside edges to attach your leaders and clamps to. You can easily remove them after you finish the quilting, if you use basting stitches. If it does have binding on it, I would just quilt it as is. Hope this helps.
