Georgene 150
I just finished this little wall hanging, 25" square. A mother made it for her son, a newly promoted US Navy Captain and soon to be Commanding Officer on his ship. I used lots of tools when quilting it....all hand guided. - Stencil for rope border, using pounce powder and sponge paint brush. - For the anchor, I printed an image I found by googling "line drawing, anchor." Then I resized it and traced it in the 4 corners, using Clover mechanical marking pen - silver color. - Circle Lord basic unit, squircle for the ship's wheel in the red areas. - Deloa's boomerang for the curved cross-hatching. And I watched the Rhonda's Rulers video on cross-hatching several times before attempting it. This was my first time for that technique. It's not perfect, I had a few glitches when trying to follow lines, but overall I like it. I had a lot of fun working on it. Any technique I tried, I knew I'd only have to do it a few times, unlike a large quilt. The mother will be picking it up tomorrow. I know one thing, after trying to follow all these lines, I'm sure looking forward to when I can upgrade to the Bliss and Quilt Glide. I'm working towards that for this year. gkazee, HeidiP, quilten and 2 others
Georgene 150
Yes, the blue flying geese are dimensional. I finally had to pin them down. Every time I'd move my machine, the hopping foot would catch under them. I was afraid I would rip them.

IBQLTN2 291
WOW, Georgene, that is very cool. I had to go back and look again to see the ships wheel. I have always wanted to make a quilt somewhat like that for my husband who is retired Navy. I have a large Navy Emblem that I was going to try to replicate in a quilt and even got some of the templates like the anchor you used. Maybe this is just the inspiration I need to do something with that idea. It has been wondering around in my quilts to do thoughts for a very long time considering he retired in 1999. How did you do the rope design in the dark blue outside border? I purchase an R&S design board of two different sized ropes but can't figure out what the stitching sequence is supposed to be. Great Job on this one it will go in my favs for sure. Just in case I ever do get around to that Navy Quilt.

I used a Full Line stencil -- http://www.fulllinestencil.com/Rope%20Border%20info.htm -- as for the stitch pattern, you do have to backtrack. In Karen McTavish's book "Quilting for Show" she illustrates how to stitch it on page 98.

That you thought of quilting the ship's wheel in the red areas... and how you did this... Nice thinking! You thought of everything. Looks so cool.
