Anne from Guam
Here is my next question for the Wise Ones: What size needle do you use for white on white fabrics? I was practicing on this type of fabric and noticed that the holes in the fabric made by the needle show up more than the quilting. That white on white fabric is sometimes a little 'plasticky' and I know that the needle hole will not shrink after washing. Should I just use a thicker thread, like King Tut? quiltmonkey
I know exactly what you are talking about! I completely dislike quilting on this "white on white" type of fabric. It is YUKKY!! I have no advice except to not use it.
Quilting Heidi
I use a 3.5 whenever possible.
JustSewSimple
I use a 3.5 needle for EVERYHING I can use it on. I have to be forced to go to a larger needle! You just don't have to worry about those holes!
Janette
Am glad I am not the only one with this issue on white on white fabrics, the stitches kind of go a bit wonky, but then perfect on the fabric next to it !!! I was using a 3.5 and tried a 4 and still had the same problem.
Guest Linda S
The old white on white fabric was horrible! The white stuff would flake off all over the place. I've had a few backings recently that I just shuddered when I saw them, but they were actually fine. I use a size 16 (is that a 3.5?) for everything. Primitive1
I stay with the 4.0 on everything, I tried a 3.5 once and it broke and I was afraid to try it again - worried that it would throw off my timing.
Mrs.A
I usually base the needle size on the thread that I'm using. Haven't quilted on that white on white for a very long time. If you have to go to the larger needle size, I would then use a thicker thread (to fill the holes).
