Not sure what to call this level of quilting. Hoping freehand works for this purpose. This would include things like making veins on leaves, textures to different objects, all without marking or using tools, it would include combining fills with details. Maybe echo quilting??

If you charge by the square foot, divide your price by 144 to get equivalent sq inch price.

Sue,

I charge start at .015...if there are a lot of stops and starts then the price goes up. The more one quilts the fast one gets at freehanding. I will freehand feathers all over a top for .015 because they don't take that much time. It is easier sometimes than stitching a panto over the top because I can quilt a larger area so there is less rollling of the quilt.

Sue there is no way I can answer your question with the poll you have. Most of what I do is freehand. It begins with an allover loose meander and goes up from there to micro stipple.

Freehand can be simple or it can be highend custom quilting and everything in between. I try to figure the amount of time it will take and charge accordingly.

Okay, since this topic is open I need to ask a serious question. Am I pricing too high or something? I have had three people call me in the last 2 weeks, as a result of the newspaper article. One lady asked about a S/R and immediately decided to call somebody else. The other two I talked to at length, finding out what kind of quilt they had, what they wanted done to it, etc.

One lady has a queen skewed 9 patch. She wants all over puzzle piece meandering. I told her it would be $85, figured at $.01 per sq. inch.

She told me she'd be here Sunday, called on Sunday to reschedule for Wednesday, and never has shown up.

The other lady called today. She has a King sized (114 x 114) yellow brick road. She wants all over freehand loops and swirls with the daisys. I told her it would be $108. Also figured this at $.01 per sq. inch, then gave her a new customer discount since I need some business. She told me that was way more than she had expected to pay. I asked her what she thought it would cost and she said about $50-60. This lady got my card from that fabric shop where I dropped off samples and brochures. She talked to the lady who runs the place. She looked at my sample before she called. I can't understand why she thought it would be that cheap. Especially if the lady from the store explained to her that I was a little bit cheaper than the Judy L. who does all the store's quilting.

ARE MY PRICES TOO HIGH?? After talking to Myrna, Norece, Tammie, and a few others I was under the impression that they were almost too LOW.

I'm getting really discouraged again.

Teresa - Hang in the girl! You have come this far.... must have it paid for by

now? Hope so! Anyhow - I would charge $130 for that king size you gave

a price of $108 - you are not to high!

I am pricing this at $13.00 per sq yard - my standard

over-all freehand price - (low-end).

You can't do this for free - just for fun! You have to be able to pay for your

time and training and thread and such....... what was that lady thinking!?:o

$50-60 - as IF!!! Stick to you guns girl - you CAN do this!

Teresa,

No you are not over priced....I would have charged her for the king sized quilt $225....so its no way to high of a price. I charge $2.50 per square foot or 0.0175 per sqare inch....I'm with Judy...What the heck was she thinking that it would only be $50 or $60 did she just now come out from under the rocks....I wouldn't have even given that to her when I first started out....

Don't let them buffalo you into something for nothing....hang in there....

Teresa, son't get disouraged, some people just want the world for nothing. We have several quilters in the area who charge $30.00 for any size including the batting and $40 includes the backing!! What are they getting for those prices??? From what I've seen at the local quilt shows they certainly aren't getting anything that I would be proud to have displayed! So hang in there. Your work will speak for itself and the satisfied customers will spread the word to others. jeri
