Hello,

I have a customer bringing me 3 Christmas Tree Skirts! First time quilting anything circular....

any advise on quilting tree skirts, and also tips to calculate square inches on a round quilt...??

The area of a circle is pi r squared. So pi is (approximately) 3.14 times the radius (half the diameter) times the radius again. I'd probably float the tops, even though I hate floating.

So let me make sure I've got it:

72" diameter

3.14(36x36)=3.14(1296)=4069.44 square inches

I'll float the tops, and I made sure to tell her to keep the quilt backs square ... you never know...

DH helped me figure the square yardage, but actually you are going to figure based on the diameter. You'll need backing that is square to load it on and work the circle on. I would base my cost of quilting on that measurement. The skirts I'm doing are approx 84 inches across, hexagon, and she's bringing 90 in square backing. Figure batting is the same...I'm calculating on 84x72 = 4.67 square yards

I charged per square inch. Did not change for circular. 42 inches across = 42 x 42=1964 x price. Did not use pi. It was still only $32 for the quilting!!

I charged the same as Lucy. The amount of thread used may be less, but the pinning, and fussing with round rather than square takes longer to work with and the time element caused me to charge as if it were a square.

I have a minimum I charge and would stick to that if it falls under that amount because of what Patty Jo says....
