Glorified Nine Patch

Recommended Posts

I did a search but didn't come up with anything. I have a Glorified Nine Patch to quilt. Its all old fabrics, and the melon shapes are solid red.

Has anyone quilted this pattern? Sorry, I can't post pictures. The link below is the pattern. Help/suggestions appreciated.

You could CC the nine-patch with a loop to elongate the four pinched areas. Then, because the melon shapes are the same as a double wedding ring, do a search here and on the internet for examples of quilting for that shape. Feathers fit in that well, as do leaf shapes, using the seam line as the spine.

Here is a photo from my sketchbook which I came up with for a DWR several years ago. Any of these can be stitched in one side and out the other so you can do many continuously. The half-heart feathers would be effective on the older fabrics you mentioned.

Thanks, Linda. I was getting hung up in worrying about the direction of the feathers..thinking if I didn't keep the feathers going in the right direction in each melon shape, the end product would look disorganized. I think I have it figured out now.

Your welcome Ardelle! I just found it on the internet, and I fell in love with the swirled feathers...and thought YEP YEP! That's what i'm going to do!

Good Luck with yours Ardelle.

Oh, did you hand piece yours? Or piece it by machine? May I ask?

Sheri,

I used Penny Harin's Pieced Applique method, all by machine. I tryed machine piecing it but was unhappy with the results. Penny's method uses applique pieces over top of piecing, so in this case, melon shaped over the nine patch. My nine patches were part of an exchange I participated in. I got mine on the frame today. My melons are quite a bit smaller, so my feathers do not swirl, but still really happy with it.

Susan, I purchased the acrylic templates on line, and made it from there. Really no direct pattern to look at, pretty basic.

Let me look and see if I can tap in a link for you to the people who sell loads of acrylic templates for quilts.

Baycreek Quilting templates!

Here's the link. It's the "glorified 9 patch".

Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
