anniemueller
Yep, I did the unthinkable. Back in early April I cut off a big slice of my thumb with the rotary cutter. Ouch, a trip to the ER and many !@#$% words later..... I'm finally ready to share. Basically I wasn't paying attention, for a lot of reasons. I didn't see my thumb was in the way of the cutter. Duh. I have now embraced with both arms and thumbs, the TrueCut Rotary Cutting System. Lock stock and barrel. The cutter has a slot and the rulers have a groove for the slot. It would be very hard to repeat my mistake with this system. The accuracy is better than I hoped. In part because the rulers have so many holes in them that it is much easier to align to the fabric underneath. No more trying to see thru a ruler that isn't very transparent. I did find that the regular TrueCut cutter made my wrist hurt. So I switched to the ergonomic, hold it with my index finger on top (not my thumb as some of their marketing photos show) and it's fabulous. I bought mine at my local quilt shop, Stitch N Time in Jackson. Here's a link to an online store that shows the product line: http://www.graceframe.com/site/rotarycutting I think it's important to share when we learn lessons like this. I only share products that I've used and really like, for whatever reason. Happy Quilting and Safe Cutting!
Primitive1
Thanks for sharing Annie and ouch! I am so sorry you injured yourself...cutting is my least favorite part of quilting...and apparently the most dangerous!

Shar Schmutz
Ouchie Annie!!!! I know this was not a club anyone wants to be a member of but luckily for us, your experience has led you and therefore us to a better way! I miss seeing pictures of your quilts, have you been posting and I just am missing them? I shouldn't talk I have not posted pictures since the forum changed! I guess I'd better get up to speed, I have been posting on FB. I hope you didn't do any nerve damage! Ditto on the thanks for sharing!
cathyh
OOWWWW! my body was twitching as I read your post!! I am glad your thumb and you have recovered. I will definitely take a look at the cutting system you are using. I have never cut my fingers, but as I get older I am way more easily distracted and it could happen! Thanks for sharing
cmkeindl1
So sorry that happened (it's my worse fear!) My husband is a woodworker and he scares me more - all of his wood magazines have photos with the articles of the designer/maker and many of them are missing fingertips! Do you think the grooves will wear out quickly (ya know, like the edge of our rulers - of maybe I'm just hard on mine)?

Much better and faster than I expected. No nerve damage. Although I did have to work up my nerve to start cutting again. The first time was several weeks later and I thought my heart would explode. I haven't posted lately because I'm working slowly on a fairly large custom quilt. Not too fancy, lots of sunflowers. Hope to be done in another week or so. anniemueller
Do you think the grooves will wear out quickly (ya know, like the edge of our rulers - of maybe I'm just hard on mine)? ************************ Hi Cathy. It's too early to say if the grooves will wear out. I don't think so, at least not like the edge of the regular rulers, because the blade can't knick the groove. I do think the cutter itself might not have an extremely long life. It doesn't feel very robust to me. Time will tell. I'm so happy to be safer that I don't care if I need to replace the cutter in a year or two. And maybe it will last even longer.
