HELP!

I've been having this problem sporadically for a while

Today, it's happened 3X in one queen sized SID pass.

I'll be stitching along fine and the needle becomes unthreaded & the top thread somehow gets tangled around the needle.

The bobbin seems fine and stays attached to the quilt.

Neither thread breaks, it just isn't forming the stitch anymore.

Here are pics of what it looks like

Any ideas on cause or a fix?

Ugh.

Meg,

I've had this happen and I honestly don't know what causes it but I always unthread and re-thread and it usually resolves the problem.  If that doesn't work then try cleaning out your tension disks.  Do you have batting in the thread guide?  Also check the cone of thread to make sure it isn't tangled or spinning off right.

I also have had this happen.  Usually, I'm quilting 90 miles an hour with my hair on fire when it happens.  (Just when you think you're really on a roll...)  I do the same as Heidi.  Check all the thread paths, change the needle and I'm usually off and running again without another problem. I have also noticed it when there's a lot of static electricity in the air with the winds and my thread seems to be flying wildly off the cone.  If that's the case, I fold a 1 inch square of batting in half, slather a line of mineral oil (Sharon Schambler made a believer outa me) or Sewer's Aid on the crease, lay my thread over the crease and stuff the folded batt in the first thread guide above the cone.  That really tames wild thread!

I was so annoyed, I walked away from Lola-baby after posting this but now I'm headed back down there.

I'll clean between the discs, change the needle (again) and rethread.

I always have a puff of batting in the first guide, but the mineral oil idea is genius!

Definitely gonna try it.

But, is it me or does it seem impossible for this occur?

How is the thread coming out of the eye of the needle without breaking?

Or, is it breaking and then sewing somehow when it's unthreaded?

I'm just baffled by the whole thing.

UPDATE...LOLA-BABY IS DOING MUCH BETTER. I'VE NOT HAD THIS HAPPEN ONCE SINCE MAKING THESE ADJUSTMENTS. THERE WAS A TEENY BIT OF LINT IN MY DISCS, I RETHREADED, CHANGED THE NEEDLE AND ADDED THE MINERAL OIL SOAKED BATTING SUGGESTION.

Thanks for the tips, ladies!
