fotch
Is there an alternative to the Hartley setup offered through APQS? Seems a little pricey for what it is...unless I'm totally missing something.
shirleyl
Tape a dowel to the top of the machine that will fit in the spool for an alternative. Shirley
ffq-lar
Lots of alternatives--someone posted their solution which was a long-handled artists brush taped on top of the machine. I love that one! Dennis made me one with a block of scrap wood. He drilled a hole in it and inserted a thin metal rod. I tape it on top as well. lisata.
I bought mine from Quilttech.com and it works perfect, could not make one myself because we a different size of screws in Europe, which don't fit....
chrisquilter
Lol, a large knitting needle works like a charm taped to the top of the machine! I have had my millie for 13 years and it is the only horizontal thread holder I have ever had. Obviously I am getting NO knitting done.
Merryjo2003
The only time you really need one is when you're using small, straight wrap thread spools. I always buy big cones of cross-wrapped thread, (even my monopoly) so I let mine go with my first machine when I sold it. Love the knitting needle suggestion. Great use for them as I'm terrible at knitting!
fotch
Thanks for the creative ideas...I bought a couple of small spools of variegated thread to do my nephews quilt on my DSM. Once I knew I was getting a Millennium I put the quilting projects on hold. Took me forever to decide on the right thread, couldn't find it on a cone and I didn't want to start the selection process all over again...nice to know I can just tape a stick to machine and get what I need. Sandra Darlington
When I first bought my Liberty I purchased the Hartley spool and cone holders. Over the years I used them both, but not very often. They are a great product to have….if you use them.
GrandmaLKB
Along those same lines................do you gals use the Vertical Cone holders you can mount at the front of the machine ? I always thought it would be handy to have it up front so I didn't have to walk around to the back to change threads..........not that walking around to the back is going to kill me, but ???? Does the tension on the thread work as well from the upfront/top holder?
Busy Quilting
Although I have 2013 machine I am not using the thread break sensor. I put the Vertical Cone holders on the front about three years ago and haven't put thread on the back spool since. Used Monopoly through the front yesterday no problems either. Don't have enough room at the back of my machine to constantly be putting thread there. I can quickly change colours at the front and save almost a metre of thread each change over. Must start using those cut off threads for basting my hexagons!
shirleyl
I use the top holders if I have a lot of thread changes and have them lined up on that side of the machine, but all my thread is stored on the backside, so I mainly use the back ones, my cone of Monolon doesn't usually leave the top holder tho. Colette
Lyn and Shirley, can you describe how to use threads from the front, I'm not clear how I alter 2013 Millie to accomplish this?
shirleyl
I'm not home, but going off memory, I come off the front cone through one hole for Monolon, and weave through all three on the front 3 hole guide. So basically you just don't use the back 3 hole threaders on the back one which I only use one hole anyway. Hopefully it is clearer than mus. SandyK
Would someone post a picture of this just so we who are new can see it. I would love to be able to do this and not have to walk to the back of the machine on thread changes. Thanks so much, Sandy
Busy Quilting
Here is a picture of my Vertical thread stand on the front. It still has the monopoly on it. I only used the last hole of the three hole guide above the tension unit for the monopoly thread. The machine is covered ready for its Christmas break. SandyK
Thanks so much Lyn!!! Can you tell us which spool holder that is?? It looks like a manufactured one. Sandy
Colette
Lyn, I'm curious, I noticed a see-through cover over the oiling wicks, did you add that?
Busy Quilting
Sandy, The thread spool holder is the one APQS sell. For about $70 a great investment. I have the monopoly elevated here so it didn't twist on the top of the post, I even threaded it through the left post then the right so it couldn't twist up on itself. The Clear cover over my oil wicks is the top of a packet of tins. I know in my previous machine they got dirty or it put threads etc on them. So I am happier to cover them. It is held on with two bits of blue tac.
