Mandalei
I can't help but think about it as an onion, but maybe I should try thinking about it as a lotus, instead. Just finished writing it up on my bloghttp://mandalei.com/2014/02/03/background-fill-tutorial-for-longarm-or-domestic-quilting/ It's really easy, but does require marking. At least, *I* require marking to get it right. Here's a quick pic of what it looks like.

Zora
Claudia Pfeil teaches this background fill. She works her vertically, with no marking, but the basic technique and outcome is the same. She does call hers "the onion."

Mandalei
It reminded me of the redbud we had in our yard growing up, kind of a rounded heart shape. Glad y'all found it helpful!
