Free Hand Doodles - Feathers, Swirls, Flowers, and Hearts

Recommended Posts

Hi there!  I had a custom quilt I was to work on for a friend but there were some issue with the fabric.  A very dark fabric paired with very light fabric for the pieced top, and the darkest fabric used for the backing.  It happened to be one of those dark fabrics that developed fiber bursts/breaks primarily on the back but on the front in some places also.  I tried spritzing the back, changing to a new needle, then a smaller needle and 100 wt. fine thread, and then three additional types of thread - So Fine!, Omni, and Glide.  Boo.  It's not batting poking through so black batting won't help - so she's going to take it home and wash it all, press it, and we'll see if that helps.  Other than that I don't think there is anything else I can do - any other suggestions that I haven't tried?  It is not prewashed and that is the only thing I can think of that might help...getting some of that sizing and other chemicals out and softening up the fabric.

In any case in the mean time I started working on a couple of E2E quilts...this isn't anything terribly complicated, but it's all free hand so I was quite proud of myself for coming up with a cute little E2E design!  LOL!  Just doodles of feathers, swirls, flowers, and hearts.  :)

Your doodles are wonderful.. I tend to get mine different sizes; yours are all the same size and looks very professional (and cute too!)

Love your freehand designs, so smooth and consistent, you must be doing a lot of PPP!! I can do it on paper. but I turn to a bowl of jelly when I get in front the machine and start quilting lol!! Great job Valerie.

Thank you all!!  I really appreciate that Marilyn about the stitch regulator!!!  I am really adapting to not having one - but I'm determined to save up for my Blissed Millie - it's gonna happen!  Just gotta quilt a few quilts first!!!  LOL!  ;)

Haha - thank you Libby!!!  I truly appreciate your kind words!!  I love my machine - even at over 10 years old!!  I think any little thing you can do to make quilting easier only allows you more opportunity to explore your creativity - so some day!!!  :)  For now I'm really happy with my machine - it's what I could afford and I'd rather be quilting without bells and whistles rather than not quilting at all!!!

You don't really need a blissed Millenium.  Save up for a mink coat.  Your work is truly beautiful.  I thought I was looking at a pantograph.
