Physical Therapy is killing me!

Recommended Posts

Peggy,

We all have a curve in our necks - reverse curve is when the curve of the spine is the opposite of what it should be. This also causes a lot of degeneration of the discs because of the wrong alignment and arthritis. Treatment and exercise help delay the progression of the damage.

Thanks everyone for all of your responses.  I am still really suffering.  I took a little Vicodin yesterday out of desperation and got quite ill from it.  Just doubled my problems.  I also had some weird nightmares!    I was afraid to take anything today except one muscle relaxant.  Just sat on the couch all day.  I fell asleep this afternoon and had another nightmare where I was falling off of a cliff and woke up yelling!  How strange!   All I can do right now is make sure my pets are fed and clean.  My husband is doing everything.  He encouraged me to try PT one last time, and I am sure he regrets it now.  I think some serious damage has been done and I am not going back ever again.  I hope this eases up soon.  Chris, what is a "reverse curve" in your neck?  I have been told I have a "forward head."  I wonder if that is the same thing.

Peggy my suggestion would be to go to a new doctor and get a 2nd opinion.  PT can hurt before it helps but it shouldn't cripple you.  (((((((hugs))))))))))

Heidi, thanks, you are right.  I told the pain dr. PT was bad for me in the past, but he did not believe me.  My bad for letting people talk me into it again.  Just by coincidence I had a yearly appt. with my primary dr.  on Monday.  It was difficult to go, but my husband took me.  I had a talk with him about it all.  He gave me muscle relaxants to get thru this bad time and wants me to go to a neurosurgeon for one last opinion.  He is also giving me the name of a more compassionate pain dr. should I go that route again.   His "nurses" told me they would call me Mon. afternoon with all this info. and I am still waiting.  I have called twice so far.  When my husband went to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions, one was missing.  Here we go again!!  Now I get to call all week to get this info. and my other prescription.  Such fun to go to the dr.!!

Today the pain is slightly less; at least I can move and breath!  I am still sitting, afraid to do anything!   I hope I am on an upward trend, then I can decide what to do.  I have been shocked by how many of you are suffering with chronic pain.  I just don't know what to say!  This is really a big problem in today's world.

Peggy one thing I've learned with dealing with my MIL's doctors and my mothers is it is always a good idea to have an advocate with you, like your husband.  Don't be afraid to question their treatment and do lots of research so you are armed with information and can make an informed decision.  I've found that if a doctor doesn't listen to what i'm telling them I will never go back.  I went to the doctor years ago and was complaining about this horrific pain in my chest.  I had been experiencing for about 4 days and the pain would get so bad that it would literally take my breath away.  When I went to the doctor he was very condescending, listened to my lungs and insisted I was making up the level of pain.  I stood firm and told him I have an extremely high tolerance for pain and this was like nothing I  had ever had.  He finally conceded and did an xray.  Next thing I knew he was apologizing to me and telling me he had never had a patient have what I have and sound so "normal."  Terrified me to find out what it was.  As it turned out I had a collapsed lung, about 18%.  I was escorted to the ER and admitted to the hospital.  He apologized to me and told me that he would never again ignore what a patient was telling him and that he would always try to remember his mistake.  I've had 14 collapses since then and finally have the issue resolved, well we hope.  Turned out I needed a hysterectomy.  LOL I had endometriosis in my lungs which is extremely rare.  About every 3 months my lung would collapse with my cycle.  I've only had one collapse since my hysterectomy and they think it was caused from the scar tissue and my lung just being weak due to all the collapses.

We should never expect nor accept a Doctor telling us we don't know what we are talking about. If they knew how we felt they wouldn't ask you upon entering the room, "How can I help you today" or "What seems to be bothering you this morning?" They'd just be able to look at us and tell. All this non-compliant nonsense just boils my blood. I wouldn't hire a vet to verbally abuse my dogs and I wouldn't hire a Doctor that would do the same to me. Heidi is lucky that the Dr. admitted to his mistake. I am a put-my-hands-on-my-hips kinda girl but I do it very politely and use the words, "Honey, or Bless Your Heart!" I am also bad to cry.

I was in bad pain again today.  Another day of watching tv!  So frustrating!  Sylvia, you are right, we should speak up.  I was reluctant to change pain doctors because then they label you a dr. shopper.  But now I can call the new dr. and tell them that my primary care doctor referred me.  That should help me get in.  I am on medicare, because I am on disability, and am on Tricare for Life.  They should pay it all so I am not worried about that, just not sure what to do yet.  Not sure I want to go the "pain dr." route again. I may not have a choice.   I do take my husband with me because male doctors give me more respect when he is sitting there.  He has to drive me there anyway.  But he isn't much help; he just doesn't know what to say, and just sits there quietly.  He tries, but just isn't much support.  He is doing all the housework and laundry, though, so I can't complain.  He even made a pork roast in the slow cooker today!   OMG Heidi, what you have been thru!  I hope it does not happen again!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Almost hate to bring up this painful topic again, but I wanted to sort of close it by saying that I am doing better.  It took about 2 weeks after I ended PT for my neck to stop spasming.  I had to stop going there.  I am now back to my "normal" pain level, and although that is not too good, it is better, and I was able to do a little sewing the other day.  I want to thank you for all your caring responses and ideas.  I am looking into meditation, and some other things you all have suggested.   I am also looking into LED light stim, a home model that is similar to what is used in doctor's offices.  Since they sell it at QVC, I can try it and return it if it does not help, after 60 days.  It is on sale and involves NO pain!  If any of you have tried that, let me know how it worked for you.  I guess it is worth trying; I would only be out the shipping if I return it.  So thanks everyone!!

My DH went thru 7, almost 8 years of constant back pain.  He would try anything but surgery.  His doctor and ortho Dr. finally told him that the only thing left was surgery.  They could not do anymore for him.  A dear friend, who is one of the top PT's in Nevada worked on him and followed up on him and he agreed that his only choice was surgery.  He finally had the surgery (about 10 years ago) and he is a new man.  It changed his life - not to mention mine.  Within 4 months, he was back playing golf again.  He did have an excellent surgeon.  We live in the Palm Springs area and have many fine Dr's here.  We had PPO at the time, now an HMO and Medicare.  We would not get this Dr. again.
