tracyv
Hi! Have been quilting happily along, and I am suddenly getting skipped stitches. I was using IQ when I initially saw the problem, but in manual mode, it stitches toward me perfectly, the stitches are only skipping going AWAY from me. Seems to be getting worse. I have checked, and the timing looks good. I have cleaned, oiled, changed the needle and rethreaded, of course. Other suggestions of what I should check? Thanks all! Quilting Heidi
Did you put in a new needle or do you have your top really tight?
tracyv
Heidi --- on the second new needle (trying different sizes and brands) and the top is on the loose side.
ffq-lar
Check your needle depth. It's usually a timing issue.
Sue E.
When I use computerized stitching, I have to have my top very tight. Also, I have found when I need a new needle I get skipped stitches. I know you said you have tried a new one, maybe it needs to be turned slightly. RunningThreads
Skipped stitches is usually a timing issue but I have had it happen with a new batch of needles (retimed after using up all my old ones and all was good.). Also check for play in the needle bar bushings and check for play fore and aft on the hook assembly and adjust the hook shaft collar if needed. As Sue said turning the needle slightly to the 6:35 position will quite often tighten up the needle/hook clearance. You did not say what machine you have but if you are sewing quite slowly with longer stitches you could have a great deal of needle flex. That's all I can think of at the moment. jimerickson
Are there holes where the stitches were missed, or just long stitches. If there are no holed, just long stitches, check your encoders for thread. or adjustment. If there are holes with no stitch, follow the suggestions others have given you. Good luck. LinneaMarie
Well, this problem seems to be going around! I have it too. Just going backward and right to left..........mostly backwards. Terrible stitches! I was afraid it might be timing. Shoot! So I have a huge customer quilt on the frame; and I guess I should fix the timing before I do any more. %#^&&$# Poopah! barbm
Don't forget to check your hopping foot height - and whether it's coming down level. That can affect your stitch quality, too.
DawnCavanaugh
Tracy, Definitely check your machine's timing. This video (found on the Product Care page of the website) will help walk you through it: Timing your Machine TIMING INSTRUCTIONS 4-1-14.pdf
tracyv
Haven't quilted in several weeks on this machine (luck me, I have two Millenniums!) Have been super busy, and just decided to wait until I had the time to spend to get the timing perfect. Sooooooo..... yesterday, loaded some fabric for practice, got out the tools, and not a single skipped stitch!!! Did an entire quilt with not a single problem. Apparently, the quilt fairies were as busy as I was! Go figure. Will see what today brings.
