Help machine binding in head

Recommended Posts

First make sure your new needle is facing correctly (scarf in the back, belly towards the front). Then check to see if the needle break caused thread to become entangled in the bobbin area. Get out any threads you can see and douse it well with WD40 to help loosen any hidden ones. Then oil as usual. If the needle is correct and there's no thread tangled up, take off the needle plate and use the fly wheel to needle down. Watch to see if the needle is scraping the hook. Don't force it. If it's hitting, you'll need to retime. Check the assembly first for nicks and burrs--you may need a new assembly if it was damaged by the breaking needle. And no need to retime until you get a replacement. Good luck!

Edited to add--if nothing is noticeably wrong, check to see if there's thread wrapped around the flywheel inside the head. Take off the left side and use a powerful light to look for thread. That's the usual reason for a sluggish up/down.
