Janice
The backing of a quilt, given to me by a customer, has selvage edges on both sides . This is not the edge that will be fastened to the leaders. Do I need to remove them. I have about 3" fabric on each side. Thanks, Janice
T Row Studio
I would for sure it is at least twice or three times the thread count in that area.
LibbyG
Yes, it would relax the material and make it more even.
dbams
If you are only going to be clamping to those selvedge sides, not quilting through the actual selvedges, I would just clip them every half inch or so. That should relax the selvedges enough to keep them from pulling the sides of the backing. If the selvedges are laying flat and not pulling the backing, I wouldn't even bother clipping them. I have been successful leaving selvedges on while quilting charity quilts, where one width of the fabric was wide enough for the back. Naturally, once the quilting is done, the selvedges are trimmed off with the excess backing and batting. I would never recommend leaving them on a finished quilt. Enchanted Quilting
I would cut them off...they are so much tighter than the body of the fabric.
Busy Quilting
I usually turn my quilts so that I can load the selvedges to the bars. That way I know for sure I have a straight edge.
jimerickson
I'm with Lyn. I usually pin the selvage edges to the leaders for the same reason. I only worry about selvage left on the seam piecing the back together. Jim
