This was a quick small custom I squeezed in for an online quilting friend Wanda - it is going into her guild show next April!  :)  I had a lot of fun playing with this - you all know how much I LOVE negative space!

She provided Warm and Natural cotton batting and I used Bottom Line thread by Superior Threads.  It is my absolute favorite thread for custom quilting!  The curly swirl designs (I'm not sure what to call them!) in each of the open white corners was free hand drawn whit invisible ink and then I just free handed over what I drew and pebbled around them to give them a trapunto look.

Including a little peek at the back because I know I don't always think to show it.  I had one little hiccup I had to rip where I hit the wrong button and started stitching a million miles a second when I meant to needle down!  :)  Pulled that out and the rest I'm really happy with!

This is beautiful! I am very new to this and have only done some free motion easy things with my domestic sewing machine. I have a Lenni coming next week and I can not wait to play with it. I have never even played with a longarm but I will do my best at creating some fine quilts. I have not used rulers either so if you could tell me what rulers are good to start out with I would really appreciate it. Again your work is wonderful!

Hi Sheila!  Congratulations on your new Lenni, you are going to have SO much fun!  This place is the best for inspiration and help too...

Rulers are so much fun - but I will tell you in the beginning, you can do a whole lot with very little!  I would say a good ditch ruler (mine is from Quilter's Rule), an applique ruler (I have Judy's applique jem from Gadget Girls but Deloa Jones has one that a lot of folks on the boards like...it's on my Christmas list!), and a basic arc ruler (I have the 12"/13" ruler from Quilts on the Corner...you can buy sets but I just bought the single ruler)...that would get you off to a great start doing just about anything you might want to do.

Eventually if you find you really use rulers a lot you could invest in circles, swags, and other rulers that you might find handy.

I hope that helps!  I cannot wait to see what you do when your machine comes! ...and thank you for the nice words on my quilting!
