Quiltsinmotion
newbie question can I use variegated in my bobbin ? how will it affect my tension ? do you adjust bottom or top tension ? which variegated is best for bobbin ?
dtreusch
Carol, I've used rainbows in my bobbin more than once. It works great. As far as the tension, I just did the 4" drop test. I don't know where that was on my Towa tension gauge. Hope this helps. Debbi
quiltaholi_518
Me too, Rainbows works. Do not try TUT, it's way too heavy and you'll get so little quilting done with a bobbins worth, it will make you crazy!
Kay M.
Hi Carol, I use variegated in my bobbin more often than in the top. I like to use it when doing overall freehand designs and there is a solid backing. It gives the customer a reversible quilt. Kay

L
Hi, I try to quilt with the same threads on top and back of the quilt, specially if the backing is a plain fabric. For me a patchwork must look great on the 2 sides. Using variegated thread in the bobbin gives the backside his own "existence". Thread tension depends on each person, some like it tight, some loose. You will find your own adjustment that will fit the way you work with your machine. Practice makes perfect... It took a little time for me to find the appropriate tension for top and bobbin thread, so don't worry you'll get it. dtreusch
Ditto to what Kay said. Anytime I get a solid back and the customer wants variegated thread on top, I use it on the bottom also. When I do this my customer is always thrilled that they can reverse the quilt and it is almost always on a freehand ETE quilt. Debbi
sylkamode
Hi Carol, I am most always working with YLI Variegated, as well as top thread and bobbin. I wind them up with the bobbin winder, and sometimes I have to change the upper tension, but mostly it works fine.
