qltnbe
When you break a needle, does your retaining finger usually break, too? I have broken two needles in the four years that I have had my machine and both times the "straight" retaining finger turns into an "L" shape. I am posting pictures of my two new retaining fingers in comparison with the one that bent after (or possibly before?) breaking a needle.
RunningThreads
Never damaged a finger and we have broken way more than two needles between us. If you have the L bobbin the retaining finger is an L shape. Here is a picture of the M one looks to me like it has a slight bend. http://shop.apqs.com/Hook-Retaining-Finger--Style-M-_p_84.html Nigel
qltnbe
No, please take a look at my pictures. I am not talking about the normal "hook" that holds the finger in place. I am talking about a definite bend in the "whole" finger.
RunningThreads
Wow. Never had that happen to us. I suspect the broken piece of needle must jam between the hook and basket causing the basket to rotate and bend the finger. Good thing you keep spares. qltnbe
I've had to wait a week to get these spares. The first time it happened to me about 4 years ago, my husband heated the metal and straightened, but since it has happened again (and I am now thinking the metal is weak), I have ordered two so that I DO have a spare if it happens again. qltnbe
As of tonight, I am back up and running; but I sure would like to know just what I did to bend this retaining finger.
zeke
That's crazy. That means that your hook got shoved forward and bent the retaining finger. You might want to check the play of your hook on its horizontal axis. You may have a problem with your gears in the gear box. Breaking the needle shouldn't bend the hook retaining finger, because the needle is on the other side of the hook housing. Zeke.
qltnbe
Angie had me run my machine for 15 minutes and then check for any play in the needle bar. There was none in any direction. So I am still in a quandry as to why this happened.
Gator
Never seen that in my 10 years of owning APQS machines. It's not normal. I would contact Dawn, Barb or Angie.
jimerickson
My guess is that the finger lost contact with the bobbin basket when the needle broke, and the basket rotated catching the finger as it came around and bending it. You might want to increase the depth of the finger into the basket slot a bit in the future. Jim
RunningThreads
Going with Jim’s thought did you check the hook for in and out play as well? Nigel
